Precipitation
Total Time = 2h 49m 9s
Overall Rank = 421/782
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 97/163
Pre-race routine:

Drank some coffee and ate 2 clif bars
Event warmup:

Hung around with a variety of friends.
Set my race goals:
Pass the wife on the bike- She had a 15 min head start.
Don't let Ron Teed pass me on the bike- I figured post swim I would have about 1 min head start.
Swim
  • 30m 42s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

Slid in the water off the dock and quickly kicked a rock. Note for next time: it isn't very deep at the dock.

There must've been a current because I don't swim this fast. I'd guess it's 2 mins.

Transition 1
  • 02m 29s
Comments:

Wow. This is slow. I think I need to practice before my next race.

What would you do differently?:

hurry.

Bike
  • 1h 20m 28s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 19.46 mile/hr
Comments:

I went fairly hard on the bike and failed to take more then a few sips of HEED for nutrition. I paid for it on the run. I had fun on the course. It was exciting to go that fast with the rain poring down, cars wizzing past, and folks with flats on the sides.
I didn't catch the wife, but Ron didn't catch me. I'll take batting .500.

I hit 41.1 mph. Can anyone top that?

What would you do differently?:

Fuel.
Transition 2
  • 01m 44s
Comments:

At this point God decided to give me the liquid I failed to take in on the bike. I lost time as I contemplated starting to build an Ark.
What would you do differently?:

Don't focus on the biblical implications of the weather. Actually, not much. It was pouring so hard it was tough to move fast with the bike.

Run
  • 56m 16s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 09m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

I sufferd GI distress the night before and the morning of the race. I thought I had it under control until I started running. This is the first time I've run while cramping, burping, looking for a bathroom. I now understand. I kept running at a moderate pace hoping this would help my stomach to settle, but it just kept getting worse. On the upside, the out and back course meant I saw a ton of friends and I got to cheer them on. Also, I kept waiting for Ron to pas me on the run. After mile 2 I figured he had passed me on thre bike since there was no way he was this slow. I figured when I saw him running back I'd either wish him good luck or ralph all over him. Lucky for Ron he had a flat on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I'vebeen racking my little brain. First off, deal with GI the night before. I've heard they have products that can help. Perhaps I'll bring some Malox/alka seltzer/tums with me next time. Second, I need to fuel better on the bike. I'm adding an aero bottle to put the liquid in an easier place and salt tabs right before I start.
Post race
Warm down:

Port-a-poddie

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Stomach and lack of taper.

Event comments:

This race is very well done. Next time I think we'll bring the girls and spend the weekend checking out the aquarium and the rest of the downtown.

On the nutrition thing, I think Olys just might be the toughest tri distance.  Short enough to go hard the entire time but long enough that you cannot completly ignore nutrition. Finding the balance between the two is hard and key.

Great job out there.

Classic race report.. laughed at the biblical implications of the weather part, and the god delivered the liquid I failed to take in on the bike. Heh.

I would have caught you.. just keeping you honest for next time.

Speaking of that, what is your next race?

Congrats on the race. Sorry to hear about the GI issues. I know all too well about those so I really commend you for hanging on and finishing the race strong. Good luck figuring out the nutrition thing. I always race with an aerobottle and it definitely helps force me to take in the nutrition. Good luck with your training for South Carolina. It was cool hangin' out with you and the wife before the race and having to listen to our GI issues - hey wait, maybe you can blame for your unhappy GI.

Welcome to the wonderful world of GI issues! : )

I do think you would have been OK with some better fueling and as you mentioned maybe some enduralytes pre-race. Way to hang in there at the end. I was busting it so that you wouldn't catch me.

Good  job out there Doug. You might want to examine what you are eating the 48 hours before your race. There could be some types of food (i.e. Dairy, high fiber, etc) that are causing you problems.

LOL!!  Sounds like something I would try to get away with.  Also laughed at the mental picture of you ralphing on Ron.

Nice race, it's not easy w/ gi issues, good job pressing on.
