After being frustrated with my swim for several months... it finally "clicked" yesterday. I swam 1 mile nonstop.  Three months ago I could not swim 50meters without resting. But I hung in there... and today I cranked out 1700 meters without rest.  The best advice I personally received was to "slow down to go fast". It worked. Now I feel like a real triathlete and can't wait for my next swim workout.  So if the swim is your limiter... hang in there... it will "click" for you too.

Awesome!!!!

Might I suggest to be excited but don't let that allow yourself to do too much too fast.  I did that and hurt my shoulders and that put me on the sidelines for about a month.  You may not but just remember that the % increases per week are there for a reason.

Congrats! I am jealous!

I continue to "hang in there" and do believe it will click some day. However, for now it is very frustrating. I have made some strides in my swim performance since I started last December, but still can't go more than 50 meters without a break. My breaks have gone from a minute to 15-20 seconds so I do see some progress there.

I will continue to work at it and break through that mental barrier!

How many yards are you averaging a month or week.  Seems that most after a 2-4 months start seeing some significant progress if they are putting in the time/yards.

It will come, keep at it.  Also, some swim instruction might be in order.  I got 4 private lessons and it helped tremendously.

Feel free to send some of that clicking mojo this way. There is never in "clicking" for me when I'm in the pool.

Congrats, agilis!

I have been training for the swim now since mid april and it "clicked" around 2 weeks ago...
My 100m times have significantly decreased (i'm not fast by any means) and i'm looking forward to more decreases!

Good luck and continue at it!

Many years ago when I began cycling... I struggled on steep mountain climbs. So I took the advice of a very accomplished cyclist. He said to go as slow as I can without falling over... then progress from there. This way you don't crack aerobically. It will still hurt... but you can keep going. I did the same REALLY steep long climb (8% avg. grade for 14 miles). I went from climbing this beast at 5-6mph to 11-12 mph.  I did the same thing in the pool.  How slow could I go and not sink.  Once I did this... I got into a aerobic rhythm... could focus on stroke... then progressed from there.  I went from a 300 meter struggle to a mile in just about 30 days.  So again... "go slower to go faster."

Kudos on the "clicking"!  I had a similar experience about 6 weeks into my swim training - read somewhere about pausing briefly between strokes and trying to imaginine yourself gliding through the water, face toward the bottom, kicking only enough to keep your balance.  I felt like I was swimming at a slower more relaxed pace, but my times were faster.  I went from 2:20+ /100yds to 2:08, and swam past the mile mark without feeling like I was going to drown or cramp up into a ball.  Times are now right around 2:00/100 and it seems to keep getting more comfortable with each swim.

Keep up the slower to go faster!

It took me from November of last year until mid-July, spending one hour (give or take) in the pool, two or three times a week, and 6 sessions of swimming instruction until things FINALLY started to happen for me. I was getting very nervous with only 2 to 3 weeks until my first tri and I still wasn't able to swim the reqired distance as of yet.

When it happened it didn't click, so much as there was a muffled thud, but for some reason, I was finding myself breathing bilaterally every third or fourth stroke. I pretty much forced myself to try to do a set or two of 100, and then sets of 200 soon followed and my confidence just shot up. I then forced myself to see how far past 200 I could do and that's when the 900 day happened and I threw my arms in the air.

I am now looking forward to working on form and technique since I know I was getting a little sloppy in my effort to at least being able to swim the distance. The results for my first tri were just posted and I swam the .79 mile OWS in 25:21. I was BOP but there were still people behind me. I am pleased with what I did on my first tri.

And to put a positive spin on things, I like to tell people that I spent the last 8 months working on 25 and 50 yard drills and intervals

Sweet!

Swimming can be frustrating and take time to get. I've been working at it for now my 5th season, I can swim long, but not very fast. Every now and then I learn something that makes things feel better. Embrace and celebrate each victory in the pool
