Subject: Nausea, high HR on run

Twice now I've experienced these symptoms on the run while racing (oly distance):  nausea, light headed, high HR while not really running hard (172 - 178... I'm usually aiming for 165 - 170) and just feeling crappy.   It's been warm out, but not really hot, although I don't do heat well.  The last time it happened I also got quite chilly (even though it was 75 out) and goosebumps.  It's been quite frustrating b/c I've been working really hard on improving my run.  My coach says it's not nutrition, but I'm wondering if I need to try e-load or thermolytes or something.  I usually only drink one to one and half 12 oz bottles of accelerade on the bike and then some water on the run.  Has anyone else experienced these symptoms or have any thoughts?  Thanks!

I'm new to TRI, but I've been a runner for many years.  I ran the Boston Marathon in the late '90s and tried a fancy diet and fluid intake the week before the race that was supposed to be beneficial.  On race day, I didn't drink enough before the race.  I had a heart rate monitor and as I started the race I was really confused as my heart rate was up from he start and got worse as the race progressed.  I ended up with severe nausea and cramping and this was the only race I've run and didn't finish.  It turns out I was severely dehydrated.  It sounds like you may be having the same problem.

18 oz of fluid on the bike on an Oly isn't much...if you took 1.25 hours that is just about 15 oz per hour not much. I try to drink 2 24 oz bottles an hour or 46 oz/hour and I'm a heavy sweater.

I don't do heat or humidity well either..but haven't had symptoms you have had. I tend to just slow down. I don't race with my HRM as it only distracts me from being moment focused.

Hmm.. so maybe I just need to drink more.   If I remember correctly, on both of those races I didn't drink much before either.  I'm racing again next weekend, I'll up my fluid intake.  Thanks!

My knee-jerk reaction from the thread title alone was dehydration.  Make sure you hydrate in the days before your race and drink more on the bike.
