So, who went to the practice swim yesterday and how did it go for you?  There sure were a lot of women there - my wave didn't start until 7:30.  I've polled a few people who feel that the swim distance was much longer than advertised.  Vig's email on Friday said it would be about 800 yards, but virtually everyone I talked to said it took about 10 minutes longer to swim than their 800 yd pool swim.  Did anyone wear a Garmin yesterday and get an accurate distance?  I biked the race course with a girlfriend afterwards and saw lots of people out there as well.

I was there. I was in the last wave. The distance had to be at least 1000m going by my swim time. I guess Vig doesn't really have a clue. Anyone know how they accurately set up a swim course?

Swim waves are posted.  I'm so psyched to be in the Purple wave this year.  Right in the middle of the pack and wearing a great color.  2 years ago, I was stuck with Silver and was like "uhhhh .... I don't want silver on my head this young!"

FYI, the swim cutoff per the website is 1 hour.  Time limit for the whole race is 4.5 hours.

Thanks for posting!  I'm in the Orange wave.  It looks like I'll be waiting all darn morning for my turn...yuck!  Oh well.. I've been lucky to go off in the first and second waves of my last two tris so I'm due for a late start

There are a lot of us doing this race!!  Maybe we should try and have a BT dinner or cookout somewhere on Saturday??  Anyone have any interest in getting together?  We could maybe have a potluck picnic or just go out to eat somewhere depending on how many are interested.

I'll be in the green.  Usually the older ladies always go last.  Glad that I'm in the middle, but that means the fast young girls will swim over me  A BT get together would be great! Klynne and I will be getting in from Williamsburg in the afternoon and we are staying in the Hampton Inn and Suites.  Not to sure if our families will be with us.  IF they're not we can be there.

I'm "pearl yellow" because I'm registered as an Athena, so I go off an hour after the first wave.

Would love to get together!  Last year we tried to meet ahead of the race, but it didn't work because we were all trying to get into the park and set up transition, etc.  Maybe something afterwards or the day before (after bike dropoff & packet pickup) would work better.  Must remember my BT tattoos!

Side question - Is anyone doing a ride of the bike course in the next few weeks?  I was out of town for the LunaChix preview ride on 7/26 and the dry run on 8/1, and I really need to practice Mt. Albert with my clipless pedals.  I may just do the Princeton Ride on Tuesday night.  Are there any other group rides that anyone knows about?  Thanks!

Pre-Race Dinner
I think a dinner the night before the race is a great idea.  Bike racking goes until 8 pm, but that's a little late to meet, I think.  How about 6 pm at one of the restaurants right there on the lake in Town Center?  There's Clyde's, Tomato Palace, Sushi King, and a few others I can't think of right now.  Tomato Palace handles groups pretty well.  Want to meet there?

Organized Rides
Laurie, the Princeton Sports ride on Tuesdays at 6:30 is a great time to try your new pedals because it's a supported ride with at least 3 cyclists from the store, including a SAG rider (brings up the rear, so to speak).  You'll also find TONS of people riding the course on weekend mornings.

Bike Course Update
I heard from someone in my triathlon club that there is road work happening on Folly Quarter Road, right after the traffic circle.  It just started yesterday (Wednesday) because it definitely wasn't happening when I rode the course on Tuesday night.  This is the section between the Folly Quarter traffic circle and the Franciscan Friars (or whatever that place is).  No word on what they're doing or how long it will be going on.

That works for me... Tomato Palace is perfect and should be easy for everyone to get to since it's close to the packet pickup hotel

Like I said before, we may have families with us so dinner sounds great if its just the 2 of us. And since we are coming from VA then we'll just go with whatever everyone likes.  This sounds fun!!!

Lots of folks do the ride on weekend mornings. They tend to start around 6:00 which is nice, 'cause it beats the heat and the traffic is minimal. I'm doing it alone Saturday morning around 7:00, but you're never *really* alone, given that people are always in front of/behind you and taking breaks at the school or the stoplight at Homewood and Rt. 108.

I rode the route this morning and folly quarter was awful. I think they are going to be resurfacing parts of the road and have put gouges in the road which are a pain to go over. I tried to avoid them as much as possible but there were some that went all the way across the road. So be careful out there. Hopefully they will have it done soon.

Folly Quarter Rd is an absolute mess right now.  Looks like the've milled sections of the road from the traffic circle all the way to the turnaround point, on both sides of the road.  I drove it first this morning to see how bad it was and then decided to stay off that road, so this morning, my girlfriend and I just started at Centennial and followed the course up to the top of Mt. Albert, and then we turned around and went back down Mt. Albert and back up again for a hill repeat, through the neighborhood to Folly Quarter, and then turned around and backtracked the course to Centennial.  Wound up being about 16 miles or so, so shorter than the race course, but not substantially.  No word on when the re-paving will be done, but I'd recommend staying off Folly Quarter until it's done.  The gouges are pretty deep.

Aaaaaaahhh! Folly Quarter was a nightmare! I kept cussing to myself--people going past in cars were probably wondering why the grumpy-looking girl-biker was talking to herself. I think I bent my rim!! Careful out there, girls.

Did the run for the first time--that Gatorade Hill is no joke. Seriously, it seems as though heading up and back from the tennis courts is uphill both ways...is that scientifically possible?

I did the course yesterday and thought I was going to crash.  Actually, a guy was in front of me when we were going down one of the hills and hit one of those deep ruts and lost his water bottle do to the impact.  That road is dangerous someone could get hurt so everyone be very careful out there.

I emailed the Howard County Dept of Public Works this morning asking what the timeline was for the re-paving project.  I'll post again here if I hear back from them.  In the meantime, I would advise staying off that section of Folly Quarter Road completely.  It's too dangerous for you, your bike and other drivers.

An update today from the IronGirl Columbia website:

Road Work being done on Iron Girl and Columbia Triathlon Bike Course

Monday, 11 Aug 2008

Folly Quarter Road (from the circle on Ten Oaks to the circle on Homewood Road) is currently having paving work completed.  The Princeton Sports ride will be cancelled on Tuesday, August 12th due to this construction.  Cyclists -- PLEASE try to avoid this area as it is unsafe for bikes.  Public Works has told us that the roads will be finished this week.

Thanks so much for posting this, Melissa.  You just saved me an hour+ drive up to Columbia for the ride tonight!  I hope they finish paving by this weekend - I really need to ride the course.

I received a response from Howard County Dept of Public Works this morning regarding the repaving project and want to post it here (and I also posted it in a separate thread) so that everyone sees it:

"Good morning,

I have checked with the supervisor that is in charge of the repaving on Folly Quarter Road. Mr. Kelly said that the work will be finished Wednesday evening August 13 or Thursday Morning August 14 at the latest. Good luck with the Triathlon have fun and be careful. If I can be of further assistance I can be reached by return e-mail or phone at xxx-xxx-xxxx. Have a great day."

Course was smooth today. The newly paved chunks are a little bumpy getting "on" and "off", but a big improvement from the unpaved trenches last week!

I'm pearl yellow too - that's gonna look horrid on my ghostly white skin! I just found this thread so I'm kinda bummed to not have gotten to know you ladies sooner. I live in Sterling so I'll be going up on Saturday for packet pickup & bike check-in. I'll be getting up super early on Sunday...and then waiting around for my wave...and hour later!
