Total Time = 1h 06m 55s
Overall Rank = 20/800
Age Group = open wave
Age Group Rank = 9/
Pre-race routine:

normal b-fast and coffee (should have past on coffee due to stomach) and some solitare. hit the can twice at home and once on the way to the race. once there setup transition, hit the crapper again, and then warmed up.
Event warmup:

quick run on road before transition closed. swam about 5-10min prior to start of race.
Swim
  • 07m 31s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 22s / 100 yards
Comments:

started out to the right next to a few good women swimmers and did well. no congestion. past one of the women early but she ended up passing my b/c i kept going right and had to veer back each time i spotted the bouy.
What would you do differently?:

sight better and stick closer to the bouy line
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

ran with shoes this time as distance from rack to mount line pretty short.
What would you do differently?:

just need to get faster b/c the others in my group can do it
Bike
  • 36m 41s
  • 13.8 miles
  • 22.57 mile/hr
Comments:

hit bike hard and tried not to let up. passed a couple women who beat me out of the water and then that was it. one guy caught me midway and made me feel like i wasnt moving. near the back stretch of the course i could see a large group ahead but could never bridge the gap and think i may have lost a handful of seconds to them at the end.
What would you do differently?:

not much. felt like i really pushed. did hit the small ring once near the end and feel it cost me some time to the pack i was chasing.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

good transition but need to get my shoes on quicker and run harder to leave.
What would you do differently?:

get faster like the others
Run
  • 20m 10s
  • 3 miles
  • 06m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

run felt great. hit first mile at 6min and felt like the pace was doable for the next 2 but then the stomach went to crap. i really thought a was going to loose control of my bowels. by the time i hit the turnaround i felt like dropping out since there was no port o potty. it really sucked b/c there were 2 guys i know i could have caught and one chasing me i might have been able to hold off but by mile 2 i had stopped twice and was crossing the road to chit in the trees and bushes. problem was people were coming and i couldnt get over a barbed wire fence so i crossed back over and started running again. the last mile was all about
What would you do differently?:

pray i dont have bowel movements on the run so i can run like i know i can. i take pride in catching people on the run and today that didnt happen. i am looking forward to a better run at the austin tri!
Post race
Warm down:

Dr Z stretched out the hips and lower back and i ate all the food i could get my hands on. got a medal for 9th overall male in the open wave.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

GI distress

Event comments:

Great job. Even with bad bowels, you still hammered it.

You gotta be 100% plus a little to race in your crowd; one slip and you're toast.

Wow, sorry about the GI distress--but great race! Wish I'd known you were up there and I'd have said hi in person--really great race and way to push it with that open wave, you proved you deserved to be up there! Congrats!

Nice job Todde, even with your problems you had. Your training is looking strong for Austin Tri and more importantly Arizona and hopefully your kona slot.
