I am a bit embarrassed to ask this, but 100% serious. I experience chafing on the tip of my penis when riding for more than an hour and a half. I have tried 4 different types of shorts (3 tri and 1 bike) and have tried bag balm, Chamois butt'r and even liquid skin bandage. I cannot find any relief. I have searched the internet for months for an answer, but find very little. Surely I am not the only one who as ever had this problem.

Maybe you could try positioning it differently.

I agree first of all on the re-positioning. It should stay put if your shorts fit right. Chafing might be coming from shorts or might become from your own shrubbery. Consider this when positioning... and consider some grooming solutions.

I have tried repositioning, but it seems to make it worse. Its natural tendancy is to kind of hide and "go turtle" with only the tip exposed. I don't think it is grooming, but am willing to trim just to rule it out. I tried several shorts and originally thought it was that the shorts were too big (as I lost some weight, it became more apparent) but now I have tight fitting shorts and it doesn't help.

Dude, just tuck it into your socks.

Sorry can't be more helfpul.

Even when turtling, I still think a manual re-orientation to the side should help a lot.

And keep it up with the LIBERALLY applied body glide - it may not be solving the problem, but I bet it would be worse without it.

Crazy thought... what about a bandaid? Then you have to worry about taking it off, sensitive skin reaction to the adhesive, etc... but it could work.  Bandaid sports strips will stay on despite sweating, and are not harder to take off than regular ones (according to my nipples anyway).  Just remember to remove it if you have to take a leak.

Okay, now I'm laughing at the thought of you forgetting to remove it!

Good luck dude - you're right it's awkward... but if I was you, I'd be coming out of the closet about the issue too to see if anyone could help.

I tried some athletic tape, the basic stuff I use to tape my nipples (ok, this is getting weird) and as soon as I applied it I realized what a big mistake it was to get it off. It was agony and you know the two schools of thought on removing athletic tape, slowly work it off or rip it off fast, well the second one is not even an option. If I could find a bandage removal ointment that I was scared to use down there, I might investigate the option further.

Wellll, if you've tried EVERYTHING, maybe you could slip on a condom?  Not only would it solve your chafing problem, but you'd definitely be prepared for another kind of "adventure" if the opportunity presented itself.

I wear under armor under my bike/tri shorts, that keeps everything in place and eliminates the chafing........at least it's helped me out.

i feel for you. i have the same problem. seems prolonged bike seat can cause shrinkage rivalling the cold pool, thereby creating re-positioning difficulty (turtling if you like). post anything that helps here and Ill do the same. Im fairly new to roadbiking, but did have the bike professionally fit. I do still wonder if its a seat-positioning issue, or just the type/shape of the seat that contributes to this.

Update:
I tried out a mixture of Desitin and Papy Powder. (I remembered this from when my son had very bad diaper rash.) Made it into a thick paste. Did a HIM yesterday and no chafing. It might be coincidence or chance, but it worked yesterday!

It is very messy howerver.

Have you tried having your bike refit and maybe you could sit a little different??? I had trouble with my hands going numb, made some changes on the bike and the problem went away...

Not the same problem, but some other version of seat style, seat location, angle, etc.  may have little or no effect on your riding but solve the problem...

Good luck, EK

as already posted here. UNDER ARMER Underwear fixed all my chaffing problems. Give it a try. A miracle piece of clothing well worth the cost.

Underarmor under your tri/bike shorts?

I would also try reposition, even while riding. You could try some bodyglide on it as well.

I have this same issue, the problem is I don't know it has happened until I get in the shower, and the water hits it, OUCH! I am going to try the different suggestions here and see what works. Those UA shorts sound like a good idea either way.

Bodyglide.

I use it on my nips and also on the tip... Be generous with your application, but make sure it's well applied. Just not too vigorously... (j/k)

I don't understand underwear under shorts either, do people really do this?

As far repositioning, the problem is that once you "turtle" it is hard to reposition.

I have the same issue.  I thought that it was just me.  I just HTFU through about 10 minutes of pain, and it seems to diminish when my adrenaline starts pumping.  I only notice it in training, not in races!

If that doesn't work, maybe bio-freeze or ice would help numb your junk! (Sorry!)

I wanted to find out if any of the ideas helped.  I am having a similar issue and I was looking for any ideas.  I see all of the ideas, but I wanted to know if any of them solved any of your issues.

I am not sure if this wil help but on my long runs I have to put band aids on my nips to keep them from rubbing raw....I use the "flexible" tye band aids...they come off very easy and work great.  I might a couple of those...might help.

Duct tape and baling wire......

I wonder if moleskin would stay on down yonder? The stuff is magic for long hikes and stays on my feet under pretty wet and abrasive conditions. Prolly wouldn't stay on since things are contracting and expanding, though might be worth a shot. Are you buying good quality shorts? I have some cheaper "on sale"shorts that the chamois/seam rubs me the wrong way. It isn't an issue with PI shorts and their seams.

Making adjustments to positioning of your equipment may help, as well as switching shorts, as others have suggested; you may also benefit from using a good penis health cream (health professionals recommend Man1 Man Oil) that contains ingredients designed to help address chafing issues: shea butter and vitamin E, for example. Good luck!
