Pre-race routine:

Drove to the check in area, which was in a different location than the start. Got my race # & shirt and set up T2. Rode down to the lake (about 1.5 miles) Set up T1, went to the bathroom, had a banana, and waited for start.
Event warmup:

Talked to some of the others who were racing. Got to meet fellow BTer newbz, who BTW, overshot the bike course by several miles and still finished fourth overall. Nice work! Also ran into a friend who was racing and got to meet a local legend, an 87 year old man who does primarily marathons, but throws in a couple triathlons just because he can. Super nice man and a huge inspiration for me. (Pic below)
Swim
  • 12m 29s
  • 480 meters
  • 02m 36s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good swim for me. Think I was able to relax easier because there were so few people and very little jockying for position. Swim was 400 meters, but time includes run up to transition. Did well on sighting the first buoy. Had to breast stroke several times before I could find the second buoy, but swam fairly straight. Got off course a bit heading back to the beach. Need to look up more often.
What would you do differently?:

Practice. Practice. Practice. Stroke, body position, rotation, balance, open water swimming, sighting. Practice it all more!
Transition 1
  • 03m 24s
Comments:

Usual slow T1 for me. I really need to pay more attention to this. When I came into the area, I tossed my garmin in a heap with the cap and goggles, then had to spend time fumbling around for it before I could head out on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Pay attention to what I'm doing.
Bike
  • 48m 2s
  • 12.34 miles
  • 15.41 mile/hr
Comments:

Did well on the bike. Got passed by some really fast folks, but did a little passing of my own. Managed to pass several people in the final mile. 2 noticeable hills on this route. Had trouble on the first and steepest one, but did well on the others. I HATE getting passed on hills!
Had almost a full bottle of Infinit. Perfect.
What would you do differently?:

More time in the saddle. More time on the hills.
Transition 2
  • 00m 31s
Comments:

Not much to T2 for me. Grabbed a bottle of Infinite and headed out on the run.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 38m 10s
  • 2.98 miles
  • 12m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

My legs felt good from the start on the run. Didn't do my normal "shuffle" to get going. Headed out and up a hill. Walked. Couldn't see exerting the extra effort needed to get up the hill and blowing the rest of the run. The downhill portion was equally difficult and I gingerly ran that portion. After the hills, started running normally. After half a mile, I started thinking that I was going a bit too hard and should back off and did. Am thrilled with the run time!
Drank a little more than half a bottle of Infinit. Good stuff.
What would you do differently?:

Run more and keep doing the easy base-building stuff
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to some other finishers and cheered those still coming in. Ate a banana and drank some water.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My old tired body. :)

Event comments:

I've done this race before and I know the RD is extremely unorganized. Most of the time the distances are off and you never know just what to expect. To his credit, this time the distances were what was listed on the website. Good thing I checked the online maps and course before-hand, because there was zero information about course at the checkin. Knowing that this is a second rate operation going into the race and just concentrating on enjoying myself makes it fun. No chip. Have no idea how they actually kept track of splits. I went up to the guy at the finish line and asked what my time was. He wasn't sure. Doesn't matter. I had my garmin but I feel bad for the first timers that didn't know what the heck were going on. I had a great race and a great time doing it.

I love the photo of you and the 87 year old wonder.

Great job on the race - I love your comment about "pay attention to what I am doing".  Amazing how little things like that matter.

Love your report and you are just killin' it. Great pic too!! You look so happy and that is a wonderful thing. And good on you for the nutrition, I know you have struggled with that aspect and now you seem to have it dialed in. Can't wait to see you in a few weeks. Way To Go!!!
