Pre-race routine:

The first thing about this report that needs to be stated is Dick Dime is way too competitive especially since he cannot swim. Today I was racing two people Mark Dillard and Dave Anderson... Mark and I have been having quite a go this season, flip flopping wins regularly... Dave has never beaten me.

I had one of my best days ever. I PR'd the course by nearly 6 minutes and felt great the whole way. With that said, on my best day, Dills beat me and Dave got me by about 15 seconds too.

Congrats to my two buds who are going down to IMAZ with me. Thank you for kicking DD's a$$ on his best day at what he believes is his best distance!

We are all going to Kona! Believe it!!

YIKES!!! PANIC AT THE DISCO!!!

Dime woke up an hour and a half late. I usually wake up at 3AM, Have some coffee, read for a while in the library, take a long hot shower and then cruise to transition early. Not today. In fact I wasn't sure I would make it in time.

Stressed, I took a short hot shower, loaded my gear and headed up. I left Denver when I had hoped to enter the transition area. Luckily I had already stopped at 7-11 to grab my breakfast the night before: Gut wrench coffee, Cinnamon and Brown Sugar Pop Tart and a Red Bull (to drink 30' before start).

Got to transition with about 15 minutes to go before it would be closed so I searched for a spot. The pickins were slim so I settled for a crappy spot tucked away in a weird corner - totally going to cost me some time. Set up my spot and headed to the porta-potty line. Tried to compose.
Event warmup:

None. Isn't that what the swim is for?
Swim
  • 43m 1s
  • 1931 meters
  • 02m 14s / 100 meters
Comments:

So I was really disappointed with my swim... but like Adam said, I got what I deserved since I haven't swam much this year. Still, I was slower than last year and I felt strong. I felt like Michael Phelps and when I got to the beach in 42" I was bummed. Most people are in agreement that the course was long. So it goes.
What would you do differently?:

Duh...
Transition 1
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Great transition with a long run with bike... I also only had a weird in and out to navigate so I'm stoked. Dills only beat me by 3" here so I know I did well. I even put socks on and my Garmin!
What would you do differently?:

Get to transition opening earlier so that I can get a good spot.
Bike
  • 2h 21m 44s
  • 56 miles
  • 23.71 mile/hr
Comments:

I rode well... just a little bit slower than last year but only by about 30 seconds or so. Last year I ran a Full Zipp Disc, and an 808 front... this year I only had my Cane Creeks which are essentially a 404 (58mm carbon tubulars).

I never felt as if I was pushing it that hard. Last year I went deep into the dark valley of pain on the bike, this year I just rode hard and never really tried to kill it. The results where just as good!
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Would have been nice to run the Zipp 999's again. I have them reserved for IMAZ though.

Beat Dills by nearly a minute here... I need to make up more time than that though. Dave got me by 30 seconds!
Transition 2
  • 00m 45s
Comments:

Great transition.
2nd fastest in my age group! Still the dills beat me by 12 seconds! WTF?
What would you do differently?:

Nada
Run
  • 1h 33m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

I killed the run. I thought for sure that I was going to take Dills and Dave Down. 5:57 faster than last year!

First 6 miles where sub 6 and then my tendinitis acted up and I slowed a bit. At mile 10 I saw Jeff Sheppard and tracked him down. I picked up the pace and we flew hard for the last 3 miles... I kept trying to drop him but he wouldn't quit! Finally he passed me into the shoot and I let him go... I shouldn't have, but I did. I still had a faster run than him by over a minute, so I gave up an age group slot there, whoopee!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

BEERS with my BT amigo's. So much fun!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Obviously the swim! 10 minutes off my swim (33 minutes) and I'm in 3rd place. Ain't ever gonna happen, but I like where my fitness is right now. My bike, T2 and Run totaled only 1.5 minutes slower than the guy who won my age group. I'd say I'm where I need to be heading into IM training.

Event comments:

One of the best run races anywhere. Definitely one of the most competitive and deep fields in the country.

I love this race as an evaluator of my fitness level. 4 years ago I did this race in 5:14, the next year I DNF'd due to a flat at mile 40, last year I PR'd in 4:45:59 and this year I PR'd again: 4:40:28!

I'm stoked even though I couldn't beat Mark or Dave.

Hey, great new PR for the distance!

Can't believe you slept in.. That never happens to you! Didn't you have an alarm set?

You've got to do something about swimming between now and November. Just think, with twice the distance it's gonna cost you over 10 min if you swim the same pace.. One of the best things you can do is go to masters swim if they have it in Vail. I've gone from 1:50s to steady sub 1:40s on my 100m splits after just 4 weeks of masters. Being at altitude too, it will do wonders for your swim!

I am in awe of your bike split! Almost 24mph on 56 miles! I am sure if you had a disk this year, you would have averaged 25! Are you renting a nice set for IM, I hope?

Awesome job on the run! That course is tough, hot and exposed.. It will now be my goal to run a 1:33 in Clearwater. Although, I am not too confident that I can do it

Nice work on transitions too! I am surprised you put on socks in T1. I usually do it in T2 to let the feet dry off, otherwise the socks end up being wet..

You didn't touch much on your nutrition in the report. I'd like to hear more about that.

Great job all around. Congrats on new PR.. Given that the swim was long and no disk on the bike, I think it's fair to say that your performance was better on all three legs compared to last year. Must be a great confidence builder for IM!

I've read many of your race reports this year (there have been a lot of them) and you have not had a bad race all year...amazing!  Maybe you didn't beat your rivals (this time) but what a great race.  Nice job!

Fantastic race. You three guys are so good that on any given day it's going to largely depend on who is having the breakout race.
