Sunny
Total Time = 1h 05m 40s
Overall Rank = 42/376
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 3/18
Pre-race routine:

Up at 0430. Went for a quick .5 mile jog to get things loose. Breakfast: 2 Gu with water, multivitiman. Sipped Gatorade Endurance on the way to Bristol. Set up transition, bodymarked and caught up with my math teacher from HS. Bishop Hendricken was hosting the event so there were a lot of former and current Hawks in attendance.
Event warmup:

200 yard swim. Bounced around on the beach to keep the heart rate up.

Comments:

BREEZE ON AND CHOP! That is great if you are sailing but lousy when you are trying to swim. First 100 yards was spent hammering it to get out of the crowd. Couple of punches here and there but nothing too bad. First turn there was no less than 5 guys hanging on to the buoy. Next leg was pretty clean as I was able to break free of my wave. Pretty much me and the #1 clyde until the last turn. He hammered me on the way in...think I slowed and he accelerated. My 5 dollar goggles from TJ Maxx (last year's Speedo model) were perfect. The wetsuit is definately getting too large...A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM WAS
"DRAWN" FOR ME AFTER THE RACE! The chop pretty much destroyed any chance I had of keeping decent form. Everyone else had the same problem so I have nothing to complain about...5th in the division. The boss said I came out in the top 10 in my wave...I will take that!
What would you do differently?:

Breathe more on the first 100.
Transition 1
  • 01m 27s
Comments:

Wetsuit took its time coming off. I think I was just tired. Mounted the bike with my shoes on. Great mount but it took me a few more seconds to get in my pedals.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to mount with shoes on the bike.
Bike

Comments:

Hammered the bike as hard as I could. Stayed in aero for most of the ride. Had to navigate around slower riders a lot. The course was very crowded.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I thought I had a great ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m 56s
Comments:

Nice and fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 50s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

Fastest paced run to date. Very happy with the pace and how I felt. Would have liked to have a lower HR coming off of the bike. There was no chance of catching #1 or #2 in the group so I just concentrated on keeping the negative spilts. First mile felt slow and I, again, struggled to get my heart rate down. When I finally did we hit a very small incline. Enough to get the HR back up. I felt very good at the water station and took a minimum of fluids. More on my head to keep cool. That seemed to do the trick as the last 1/2 was very strong and it was nice to draw off of the energy of the spectators. Full on sprint for the last 100. Must have looked kinda funny... The Zoot Tempo TT shoes are perfect for this distance. Very happy with how they went on and how they felt.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing!
Post race
Warm down:

Walk around in shock that I had a 1:05 for a time.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still too heavy for my height (228). Was amazed at how diesel #1 and #2 were built in the Clyde division. Pretty happy that I was somewhat within shouting distance but it is obvious that these guys are solid athletes and I have a lot of work to do.

Event comments:

Today was a great day. I surprised myself BIGTIME. It is really nice to see things starting to come together and see the efforts of the last year starting to really pay off. I was utterly shocked that I came in 3rd in my division and equally shocked to see that my time would have posted 3rd in the 30-34 division...there is hope for me yet! Kristy (my wife) is amazing. She has been my coach/cheering section through this whole body transformation...I could not do this without her.

Highlight of the day - I won the wetsuit raffle!!! HOLY SMOKES!
