Subject: New to BT from New York

Hello everyone,

My name is George, I am from Buffalo NY.  After being a collegiate shotputter for 5 years, i've decided to switch gears and get into triathlons to lose weight.  I started at 275 lbs in May, im down to 245 as of last week.  A good friend of mine turned me onto this site and I am addicted...Looking to do my first sprint triathlon in September (yikes!).

Welcome to a new lifestyle with some of the greatest people in the world!! Congrats on the weight loss! You'll be amazed at how easy it comes off by just being consistent with your training.

BT has been a huge part of my training and the friends I have met here are awesome. I started logging here and doing triathlons in 2005 and have dropped about 55 lbs. As a former athlete just be careful not to overtrain. It's easy to let the competitive juices take over and put in more time than is necessary. The plans here on BT are very solid plans, choose one that fits your needs and try to stick to it.

I mention the overtraining only because a femoral stress fracture kept me out of running for most of 2006. The biggest reason for the injury is that I was doing too much over and above the plan because I felt I needed it.

Have a blast in the sport and once again, welcome to BT!!!

George, welcome and good luck. Can I assume your first triathlon will be the Finger Lakes? It is nice to see another person from the Buffalo/WNY area on BT! Let me know if I can help you in anyway.

Thanks for the advice with overtraining, I will keep that in mind.  My first race will actually be the devils challenge in baraboo wisconsin. I am up here in La Crosse Wisconsin for work training.

Welcome!  I did SP and Discus in HS...  all the runners were always joking how we never had to work hard...  HA!  If they could see us now!  Good luck and most importantly have fun!  You will do great!

Congrats on taking on tri's George! Are you from Ohio? I just moved to the Cleveland area a couple of months ago and I'm having a hard time finding other people who do tri's/marathons. I think it helps a lot to have people going through the same stuff as you (stay motivated, etc.)

I just started posting on BT, the people on here are great & have a lot of good tips. One thing I would recommend while you're getting ready for your first tri is to get some open water swimming in. I haden't had any trouble with the swimming leg in tris until last weekend (Vermilion). There were pretty big waves & it really messed me up. You might want to check out the place you will be swimming in your tri.

I grew up in Ohio but went to school in new york, and I am now in Wisconsin for work until december. I will be returning to buffalo, NY to continue working when training is done.

I need to do some open water training...been putting it off too long.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and support!
