Flowing Lake Sprint Triathlon

This is the last tri that I have an entry to that I will be giving away. This one is on September 20th (yup, same day as AG Nationals) near Snohomish. Put on by BuDu Racing, so you know it's a quality event. The park in which the race is held caps the number of participants at 200, and last year the race sold out with no day-of registration. So I'm offering up an entry that's worth $60 today, and would go up to $70 in another 10 days...

Flat swim... (duh!) Somewhat hilly bike course, but on quiet roads. Run is hilly, but completely in the park, and is short (4K or thereabouts). Weather? Hey, it's western Washington in September, so your guess is as good as mine. Last year was perfect. (See www.buduracing.com for more info)

So... How can you score such a deal? Let's see... I've tried the photo contest ("Funny photos" --good response). I've tried the essay contest ("Tell me about your first..." got one entrant). How about a contest for the best "why I deserve to get this race entry" post? I don't care if it's completely factual (though that could help -- how would I know in any case?), just make it sound good.

I'll close submissions on September 5th (midnight), and announce the winner on September 6th.

Subject: CORRECTION!!! Race date is 9/13, NOT 9/20.

DOH! Correct you are!

Which makes this the last chance to qualify for AG Nationals on 9/20...

I guess if you showed up on the 20th, you'd be guaranteed 1st place. Wink

Let me just say that while it really sucks that you got injured and couldn't compete this year, I think it's awesome that you have been hooking BT'ers up with race entries all season long. Now on to the reason for my post.

I could really use this race entry and here is why. My wife and 2 of her friends have signed up to do this race as a relay team. At first I thought I would be content to come and cheer her and her friends on. After racing Sammamish on Saturday, I have realized that I am not ready for my season to be over yet. I talked it over with my awesome wife, and she said that if I get a free entry then I will have her blessing to race. If not, she would prefer that I not spend the $. My wife is doing the run leg, and I think that I can be finished before she starts her run. That way I can still take pictures and cheer for her. It really would be the best of both worlds.

To sum it all up, I think I deserve this entry because I NEED to race 1 more time this year and without your gift, it's not gonna happen.

Thanks,
Dan
PS. I also think it would be cool to win because I am generally very unlucky when it comes to things like this. In fact, I had never won anything up until my last race when I won a mini fridge in a random drawing.

I agree, David.  Your attitude and your willingness to gift your season to us has been in the true spirit of this sport.  Hope to see you out racing next season, for sure!!!

Hi! total N00b here.

I just finished my first ever TRI (Lake Sammamish 8/23) and it was an overwhelmingly emotional and wonderful experience. I had been toying with the idea of doing the Flowing Lake Tri. But the costs of getting all my equipment set up as a beginner kinda tapped me out. but honestly I go through bouts of 'not sure I can do another one' followed by a round of 'I really got to do another one this year'

I just joined this site now that I feel like I ~will~ be continuing with this sport I think it is sad that you are hurt, but very cool that you are encouraging others by giving your spots away.

You can read my lengthy race report here http://shebaduhkitty.sweat365.com/2008/08/24/my-first-triathlon-race-report/

thanks

Very cool of you to offer up your entry.  I'd love to do another tri this season, but I'm running the Waterfront 15k that day.

We have a winner here. So what I'm going to want to hear about after the race is just how chose it was for you to finish in time to get the pics of your wife doing the run leg (and I expect the pics to be posted as proof, because, as you know, "pics or it didn't happen."

I'll send you an email tomorrow to prove my entry transfer.

Subject: Public apology time...

I've already cleared this with Dan, but I still feel I should throw this out there...

When I went to actually do the transfer, Rory notified me that they'd already taken my name off the start list (they're good friends, and knew I was still recovering, so I couldn't race). And they filled that spot with some one else. This particular race puts them in a real bind with the parks department -- they're STRICTLY limited to 200 entrants. And I don't blame them for filling the spot -- it's a high-demand race, and it's also their bread and butter. I think they did the right thing, and I don't blame them one bit.

But it was a miscommunication between them and myself. I didn't know they'd filled the spot, and I didn't ask (my fault). I'd told them about forwarding an entry to next year (for Satsop) and they thought I meant both Satsop and Flowing Lake.

So it turned out that I didn't have a spot at this race to give away. Ooops!

My apologies to every one.

But it's been fun to read (and in the case of the first go-around, see) the entries that people made.

And don't be offended if I say that I hope I don't have to do this ever again...Wink
