Pre-race routine:

None - I ate two hardboiled eggs while the group was still getting ready. Then we packed up the SUV, and once we arrived to the area, I separated from the group. They are newbies and planned to do the 50-mile ride. My start location was in a different area, and I needed air in my tires. So I headed out.
Event warmup:

Rode bike from the vehicle to the coliseum. Pit-stopped, was able to locate safety pins for my bib (I forgot my racebelt) and rode over to the start.

Comments:

Was riding GREAT - made it to Hell's gate at 10:39 AM. I felt awesome. Well once we turned south, I slowed much more than I thought. I wished I had a line to jump in on. I missed quite a few who passed me.

Towards the end I jumped in - this guy didn't check to see if he had cleared my front tire. I sucked my teeth and decided to utilize the line he was in. Got me through about 4-5 miles.

What would you do differently?:

HHmm, keep up the strength to latch on to a few more lines after passing Hell's Gate.

Oh and probably stop at Rest Stop #3 to drink pickle juice and eat a banana. I hate crowds, so my first stop wasn't until mile 44 (the fourth rest stop).
Post race
Warm down:

This case it was a cool down, I put the bike on the grass, took off socks shoes, put phone in bento box, and stood in the water. There was a fire hose attached to a hydrant and it was on, and I just stood there for about a minute. Checked the leg again, felt good, just wanted to get some food and a bit more salt into my body.
The guy who was selling 'the Stick' let me use one on my leg before we left the area permanently for the weekend.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Well...the cramp at mile 80 - yeah didn't help. When I stopped it was debilitating. A guy had to help me unclip my left foot, because I couldn't move my right quad at all.
Another guy gave me BioFreeze (Thanks Man!!!) and yet another guy poured cold water on my quads.
Anyway - until mile 92 I eased up and kept massaging the leg, while pedaling
At mile-92 I had to stop I was almost out of fluids, and my quad seized up again. A volunteer helped me over to the cots, and a massage therapist worked on the area for a while. I figured I would stay there for as long as I could in order to finish, versus being sagged in.

Apparently even though I was taking the Hammer Nutrition Enduralytes the SAME way I always do - it wasn't enough. The pickle juice I drank probably helped to keep things from getting worse.

Event comments:

I know it took me longer than planned to finish, I was hoping between 5:40 and 6:30 max. But since this was my First Full Century Ride (like ever), I should be happy I finished, huh?

Much thanks to all of the volunteers, nice riders, and 'fans' along side waving and cheering everyone on.

And to you... Thanks for reading.

Nice job getting it done!  Both Marcy and I thought we saw you yesterday, but we didn't know you were coming.

Great job completing your first century!

Very well done!  The first century is always a memorable one!  Usually after Hell's Gate, you ride into a headwind and it gets hot, but you stayed strong!

Congrats!

Thanks - oh yeah I forgot to add,

I didn't have my gloves, so the chip seal, chip & seal, whatever it is called!! Was pure H-E-Double Hockey sticks all caps with exclamation marks,  on my hands, wrists, and forearms.

Oh yeah and the guy who 'fixed' my bar tape on Saturday, made it come unraveled from the top instead of the bottom. :-D

The name of the race intrigued me.  I don't think I could do my first century...EVER...in a race called Hotter N Hell.  Hell's gate?  Yikes.  A place I would never want to find myself.  Kudos for finishing it up.  Hope the legs are working properly today  Cheers, with a cold one.

Good job, Shiryl! I'm impressed as usual that you just pushed through. That pickle juice can really save you in a pinch (it saved me--I accidentally left all my nutrition in the car after packet pickup and couldn't find my car before the start) if you time it right. You are so going to be ready for your next race!

Thank you very much.

The legs are well, still a bit tight. Went swimming on Monday and will go tomorrow. I DID run around trying to find Sport Legs after the ride.

the "cold one" sounded good - lol

OMG - Coach Gerald told me!!!

I thought ohh WOW, and I was griping mine wasn't enough!!!  The pickle juice is a wonderful thang when out there in the heat like that.

BTW I heard you are up for an Ironman - which one?

At the risk of sounding like a bad acting soliloquy - I REALLY thank you all here for your support, comments, and more. Not just with this race report, but in all I do.

I don't have much support in the way of family (at least my 10-year-old still thinks I am cool). Just my daughter and I living here. So it means a lot to me to have an 'extended family/friends' network who look in on me and others here and praise and offer support. The people in my tri group and you all here are the peeps who give me the pats on the back.  And that helps give me the courage to go out - yet again.

Just really wanted to Thank everyone with all sincerity.

Okay I'll step down, and be quiet. :-

Sounds like a good ride for you with the exception of the tire at the end!  I wanted to ride this year but sprained by ankle so I hung out at the expo area waiting for my friends to finish.  Seems like the weather was a bit milder this year.  I saw you mention that you got one of those bottlesox...did it work?  I saw their booth and it looked convincing but didn't get one since I wasn't riding.  Thanks!

Dude...I LOVE BOTTLESOX!!!  I used one during my ride and it WORKS!!  Don't expect miracles like a subzero attached to your bike...but freeze 3/4 of your water overnight...fill the extra 1/4 the morning of your ride...cover with a bottlesox and you are good!!  USE WITH A POLAR BOTTLE AND YOU ARE EVEN BETTER!  I bought one last year at the consumer show and used it in the 2007 ride...tried to find them after the ride that Saturday and they has packed up and left.  Found them again this year and loaded up on them.  I don't want FREEZING water because it will shock my body...but cool water kept it just right for this ride...to HELL and BACK!!  GO Hotter 'N Hell!!!!
