Subject: When to strength train during training

I am currently training for a half marathon (need a goal for the off-season), and am wondering where to fit in my strength training so that it will be most effective.  My current training looks something like this:

Monday speed work, Tuesday rest or easy run, Wed spin/bike, Thurs easy run, Fri rest, Sat long run, Sun swim.

Where should I add twice a week strength training?  Thanks!

Any days other than speed work day and long run day.

I do every other day. Of course during the season my strength training consists of push ups and crunches only.

Personally, I would strength train once in the AM on wednesday or before spinning. And secondly lift on sundays. It really depends on the person, but from my experience some good core training followed up by a 45 minute spinning has been good to me.

If you want 2x - Tue & Thur

If you want 3x - Sun, Tue & Thur (And you have the additional time available)

I did it 2x a week for the most part this summer but will go 3x once the bad weather hits and I am at the gym more than outside.

I'd probably do your lifting session on thursday and always do your easy run on tuesday instead

You can do it on light workout days (short runs)

Do a good warm up with some jog and tecnique drills

Then strenght training focusing on plyometric exercises: squat and jump, burpees, deadlift+curl+press and lunges

Finish with a short run. You can do this 1-3x a week depending on the phase you are.


Sometimes my trainer also puts my team doing the strenght exercises on interval training days.
