Subject: Swim to transition run is 600', take off wetsuit or run w/ it on?

In my race this weekend (in the rain and wind) there is a 600' run from the beach area to the the transition.  My question is: should I take my wetsuit off when I get out of the water and carry it to transition or take off the top half and run w/ it on like I 'normally' would.

The reason why I ask is I notice it is much easier to take of the suit when its wet than when its dry and it seems easier to kick my legs out and a 600 foot run (2 football fields) seems like a longer run than normal.

so WWYD?

Quarter mile at Accenture, I dropped the wetsuit down to my hips and ran....took off at T1, no issues taking the suit off, ripped right off.

Had a similar experience at Lake Logan this year.

Couple thughts:

1) Indeed it is much easier to run without the wetsuit and to get out of it wet.
2) I think some folks just left their wetsuit at the swim exit (they allowed us to place shoes at a mini transistion area near the swim exit for the 1/2 mile run to T1) and they were not penalized.

Does this help any?

IMHO, that's entirely personal preference. It sounds like you have a two piece suit, as do I. I find it difficult to run "longer" distances with my bottoms on. However, I see many athletes that prefer to run to T1 in their bottoms.

That said, my suggestion would be to stick with what you know for race day. I wouldn't try a new technique unless you've had ample time to test it in training. If you do have time, go with whatever method you believe is fastest. If not, stick to your normal plan.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Did Accenture too. Did the opposite though.....took it off, had shoes 50 yds from the swim exit, and ran with it over my shoulder. Passed some people that still had theirs on. It's hard enough to run after a long swim.

x2 on the personal preference though.........do what makes you feel comfortable.

I usually take the top half off during the run and the bottom off once I get to transition.  I don't like having to carry the wetsuit, so it's easier to just run in it.

The more water still in the wetsuit, the easier it will be to get off.  I'd strip it right after I exit the water's edge and run with it.

Well, not when the water temp is a little brisk 62 - 64 degrees F, at least that's what I found out at the Spirit of Racine 1/2 IM back in July!
