Pre-race routine:

After a breakfast of toast and pb, picked up Autumn at her house and headed for the University Aquatic Center. Our heat time was 8:35 am, and we were there by 7:30, which was good. This race had no transition area to set up, so we just wandered around for a bit, and went for a short walk.
Event warmup:

Stretched out before starting the swim. We couldn't get in the pool to warm up since there was a heat of swimmers in there.
Swim
  • 30m
  • 1900 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim was good. I was nervous about it because I had never swam 30 continuous minutes before, but I finished with no problem. I was also happy with the pace.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. Try not to fall back in when exiting the pool. :)
Transition 1
  • 10m
Comments:

Everyone had a standard 10 minute transition, which is an eternity. No problem getting totally changed out of suit and into tri top and shorts. Still had several minutes to kill once I got upstairs to the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Try to get my shoes clipped in sooner so that I didn't waste 30 seconds doing that.
Bike
  • 29m 30s
  • 6.9 miles
  • 14.03 mile/hr
Comments:

My foot slipped out of the toe clip about 4 times, which was frustrating. Since I had tri shoes on with a cleat on the bottom, my feet didn't sit in the clip very well.
What would you do differently?:

Try the cleats earlier so I could have changed into my running shoes
Transition 2
  • 10m
Comments:

Another 10 minute transition, which was a long time considering all we had to do was change shoes and walk 10 feet to the treadmill.
Run
  • 30m
  • 2.75 miles
  • 10m 55s  min/mile
Comments:

I was very glad to be able to run the whole thing, given the IT issues of late. I could certainly feel it, but the advil dulled it enough so that I could keep running. Also considering the extreme lack of running of the last several months, I'm actually pleased with this pace.
What would you do differently?:

Take another advil :)
Post race
Warm down:

Walked on the treadmill a bit, stretched a little

What limited your ability to perform faster:

IT band on the run

Event comments:

This was a fun race. I hope they do it again next year! I was lucky to have a lane, bike, and treadmill right next to Autumn, so that made it nice relaxed race!

Course: 30 minutes on the exercise bike. I was so slow compared to those around me! I bought SPD cleats for my shoes especially for this race, and they didn't fit in the pedals, so I ended up using the toe clips. Autumn couldn't get her shoes clipped in either, so not sure what the deal was with the pedals!

Well, like Autumn wrote, we don't know about ranks for this race yet, but I'm guessing I'll be my normal MOP. This was a fun race, and it was great to race next to Autumn (in lane, on bike, and on treadmill). Last time we raced the same event, she left me in her dust! :)

Thanks so much! Honestly, at masters swim I am still usually the slowest or second slowest person there! We have a fast group, I guess. But I'm gaining on them! I'm not nearly as far behind as I used to be.

For all women, my swim distance was 10/51, so pretty good. Overall (men and women), it was 18/79.

The knee is coming along, slow but sure. I was pleased that it lasted the whole 30 mins.

Well, even if I did, you turned around and kicked mine the rest of the race!

Yes, we definitely should do this next year!

Thanks Ian! Yeah, that run was not super fun with the knee. Thank goodness the treadmills were set up overlooking the pool and there was the nice distraction of watching other swimmers.

You will be a swimming machine before you know it, Ian! You've come a long way already! I was just telling my husband the other day (who is struggling mightily with his very beginning swim technique) that you have made stellar progress and that he can too!
