Subject: Newbie in race questions (terminologies and rules) HELP!
Being a newbie there are a few terminogies that I'm still not familiar with. I saw these choices on a website and wondered which one I should click on. Can some one pleaes help me with these?

Male age group - I'm 36
Clydesdale only - Where is the line where ones is a clydesdale?
Athena only - ?

Thanks for any help

Age group is pretty self-explanatory. Clydesdales are nearly always defined as men over 200 punds and Athenas are women over 180 pounds. Hope this helps. Have fun with your first race!

If there are no choices for the age groups, pick 35-39.  Usually they are broken down by every 5 years.

woo hoo!  signing up is half the battle!

Flyboy,

Clydesdale was the only choice with no subcategories in it. I guess that's mine.

Thanks for your response.

COgirl,

The choices where either age group or clydesdale (amoung others such as Athena) with no subcategories but I think I'll click on Clydesdale.

Agreed, registering (espcecially for the first one), is half the battle.

Thanks

There is a nice article on the C-L-Y-D-E-S-D-A-L-E issue

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/cms/article-detail.asp?articleid=...

Also, the weight limit varies from race to race. One race I did, I was suprised to realize that I had be automatically entered in the Athena category because I weighed 145 lb.

It was acutally pretty cool. Although I came in like 20th place in the my age group - I won 2nd place in the Athena division and even won a prize. It was just a framed certificate, but cool none the less.

The be fooled into entering the clydesdale category thinking that it will be easier for you to come in a higher spot.  Some of those clydesdales are in very good shape.  Your best bet is to stay in your own age group.

That really depends on what your age group is and what your actual weight is. The 30-35 age group is typically extremely competetive in triathlons...something about younger guys not having enough discipline to properly train for 3 events and also that it takes 5-10 years of "base" training to reach your potential.

True, true. The top dogs around here are 35-45 with only a few execptions.

Oh I'm not looking to beat anyone.....for now. I'm only looking to cross the finish line. But thanks for the info. It may come in real useful when getting clobered by another clydesdale in the water.

I hate when the Clydesdale division is full of guys that don't look like they weigh 185 soaking wet....where is the scale when you need it!

From the USAT website:

"Male athletes weighing over 185 pounds and female athletes weighing over 145 pounds may choose to race in a category known as "Clydesdale" (for men) or "Athena" (for women). The Clydesdale Commission (also known as Team Clydesdale) is working to provide more racing opportunities for larger athletes."

However, a lot of tris state males must be 200# or more to race Clydesdale...

Really? At the two USAT events I raced last year, I couldn't enter Athena because I was just a hair under 150 and that was the cut off.
