why were you hoping for 20mph? do you have previous training sessions at that pace with different shoes? my guess is that the shoes will help a lot, but not that much. if you have the money, get clipless pedals/shoes.

Bike shoes will allow you to transfer more power to the pedals, but it's doubtful they would provide and extra 3 mph worth. Bike selection, bike weight, position, and most of all the engine may be bigger factors than the shoes. There are many factors that have a role in speed, shoes only play a minor part.

Nope.  Not even close.

See jeepfleeb's post above.  There a lot of elements that go into getting faster on the bike.

And welcome to BT!!

Probably not...but you didn't say whether or not you were currently riding with toe cages or not. If you just have platform pedals with running shoes, you'll definitely get some increased speed with clipless pedals and actual bike shoes.

Running shoes make for a real fast T2

And there was always somethng really satisfying about going past people all kitted out in fancy gear when I was riding my mountain bike, wearing a t shirt and board shorts, in running shoes, carrying a backpack.

Sure I've got faster since upgrading to some of the real tri gear, but I sometimes wonder if it hasn't made me a bit too serious about it all...

And after you get some good shoes, look into some clip on aero bars, that is where you will be able to pick up 1mph give or take.

I started training with straps and old bike shoes with stiff soles.  When I got clipless pedals, I found them to be worth 1 to 1.5 mph.
