Total Time = 3h 05m 19s
Overall Rank = 288/474
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 28/39
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 3:45 and ate a waffle before jumping in the car and heading to Tugaloo state park. The drive took a little over an hour and a half so it wasn't to bad. Arrived about 6am, ended up there early enough to park right at the TZone, which was nice.
Event warmup:

ran about a mile then swam a nice easy 150 before the race started.
Swim
  • 34m 21s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 05s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim wasn't bad but a large amount of fog rolled in and hid the buoys. At one point I was in the water and couldn't see either shore line or the next buoy. A large group was swimming at a right angle and the boats were yelling at them that they were going the wrong way. I stopped and took a second to navigate the correct way before starting back into the swim. If it had been a regular shaped swim I would not have felt the need to stop but the angles were a little off. I'm glad I did but it really slowed me down. (If I had followed the people in front of me I would have needed a very long detour to correct the situation)
What would you do differently?:

swim faster and try to trust myself and keep swimming...Although I was the only one at one point swimming in the right direction :)
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

It was a long run from the water to T1. part of that was the fact that the lake was so far down the other part was that it was just a long way to the transition.
What would you do differently?:

Work on coming out of the water and not having my heart blow out of my chest...my heart rate is level and calm all throughout the swim and the moment I get out of the water it spikes...practice, practice, practice.
Bike
  • 1h 21m 35s
  • 26.1 miles
  • 19.20 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was basically rolling hills, with 2 or 3 bigger hills thrown into the mix. I thought that the first 6 miles happened to be the worst after that I got into a rhythm and didn't have any issues. I think that the first hill (2 miles in) took more out of me than I would have liked. The bright side was that you get to come back down the hill towards the end of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

bring my cadence up while attacking the hills. focus on steady climbing instead of loosing some of my momentum.
Transition 2
  • 01m 30s
Comments:

Came in towards the dismount line and pulled off a nice continuous off and in. Ran the bike into T2 and racked it. Socks/Shoes on and then out the other side.
What would you do differently?:

speed it up a little. I think I took to long putting on my shoes and socks, drinking water.
Run
  • 1h 05m 42s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

Right out of T2 you had to climb a hill...it wasn't nearly as rough when I ran it in warm-ups. I don't think that the course was that bad; I think that I was just feeling the heat and the fatigue at this point so it seemed worse. I ran solid for the first 2-3 miles then hit the wall. It was a mix of run/walk for the next 2 then I tried to suck it up and finish the race strong.
What would you do differently?:

work on my endurance. I can't quite break my old sprinter roots from High School/College. I need to remember to pace...not blow out the beginning.
Post race
Warm down:

stretched, jogged a little. Grab a bite to eat and drink than then packed up the Jeep.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

conditioning on the run, pacing. My brother there to kick my backside

Event comments:

Great race. I look forward to competing again next year. It was well organized and the volunteers/staff were excellent. I am looking forward to Brian being there next year to make me work even harder!

Great race. I was right behind you at 3 hours 6 minutes. It looks like the pic in your profile is from the Indian Springs race - same as mine.

Nice job.

I thought you two were the same person talking to yourself (e.g. just about the same avatar).

Nonetheless, solid race ACE. That is a good swim considering the situation, and 19.2 avg is great on a hilly course.

Was that mean brother of yours not even there to cheer you on?  Nice race.  That fog on the swim was crazy.  Good job not following the crowd.  I did the same thing on the run...only slower.  If I could only get my bike time to look like yours, I'd be in good shape.  Congrats on a great race.
