Wilmington, North Carolina
United States
Set Up Events
60F / 16C
Overcast
Total Time = 1h 24m 52s
Overall Rank = 173/573
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 29/59
Pre-race routine:

got william up and we had his choice of breakfast (poptarts and sugar free red bull ) No, I know that was not terribly healthy, but was good :) Drove to the site and got set up
Event warmup:

walked over to the swim exit and walked that route back to transition. got on the bus to go to the beach and tried to stay warm
Swim
  • 25m 13s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I hit the ladder and was out at 22:31. Then you have a .28 mile run/jog/walk to the transition area where the mat is. This makes White Lake seem like two steps.
What would you do differently?:

not sure. navigation was pretty good for me. probably keep working on stroke technique and strength. was better than two years ago by a minute and a half with a longer T1 run, so that is good.
Transition 1
  • 01m 50s
Comments:

nice fast T1. can't ask for more
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike
  • 35m 51s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 20.80 mile/hr
Comments:

middle 1/2 of course had some pretty decent head winds. too many people on the course. Hard to avoid drafting. probably could have gone a tad faster except for avoiding drafting on parts of the course. about a minute slower than 2006, but part of that is the wind and part of it was a more crowded course.
What would you do differently?:

continue to work on bike fitness
Transition 2
  • 01m 14s
Comments:

not bad. didn't get my feet out of the shoes on the bike in time, so I had to take them off at the rack. didn't really matter much given the time
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 20m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

not a bad run. first mile was over 7:20 if it was marked right, so I picked it up after that. Was trying to break 20, but didn't get there. Ran on the street some to avoid all the people on the sidewalk. 1 minute faster than 2006, so that's an improvement.
What would you do differently?:

Probably pick up the speed sooner. Was close to throw up level at the end, but still had something in me probably to go faster.
Post race
Warm down:

jogged out to the bike course area to route for william. then ran to different parts of the run course to cheer him on and stretched while waiting for him

What limited your ability to perform faster:

swimming ability and too many people on the bike course. probably also bike fitness could be better.

Event comments:

this is a great, fun race. even with 1300 people, i recommend it to everyone.

Great race! Improvement is what I am for.

I know how you feel on the run, and you explain it better. I'm red lining at the end, but after a 5 minute rest I feel like I could run another 5K.

I saw a group pass me on the bike that I could tell was not working together drafting, but they were having trouble getting sorted out. I was glad I didn't hold anyone up on the bridge like I did last year.

Nice race report. Congrats on improving your time and fast run time. I need to figure out how to dig deep in the run so I am at throw up level at the end.

I love the swim on that course, but don't like the bike, because of the crowds and not being able to pass people on bridges. At white lake sprint, they spaced out the waves farther which really helped thin out the bike course. They ought to do that here, too.

Great race! Congratulations on the improvement!

I remember the bike course being packed last year.  I certainly hope they don't add another 100 participants next year!
