Week 1 in the books - i wasnt that impressed with the Big 4 teams this weekend, City/Pool and Arsenal all were fortunate to get a win and didnt look substantially better with their new players. Its always interesting in the first few weeks where the middle or lower pack teams are fresh, rested and rejuvenated enough to put in a cohesive performance against so called superior teams. i attribute that to the fact that the Top teams have generally had players at a major World or European tournament and a pre-season tour somewhere in the world so players are still mentally and physically fatigued and the they have not had the time to integrate the one or two new signings from the summer....

This usually dissipates as the season draws on and the lower teams face injuries and fatigue that then shows them drop in form. That said - i was happy to see Southampton play so well....it was amusing to watch Rodgers reaction to the Sturridge winner.....he showed the pressure that is now on him vs the relaxed demeanor of someone with lower expectations - easier to be the hunter than the hunted.

The other interesting point was the fact that new players emerge who were either cast off by larger clubs or brought in from lower leagues domestic or abroad....Newcastle player Cabelllas impressed as did Tasic for Southampton...i still maintain the belief that there are many bargains out there if the top teams just cast their net a lot further and have faith.

And finally......the wife was not ecstatic to see the EPL return....sshhh....La Liga and Serie A are still to come!

I saw a stat somewhere saying that out of the last 5 or 6 WC years, the winning points total barely reaches the low 80's.  And that it can be blamed on the fatigue and potential injuries suffered by the better players that are usually on the better teams.  For instance, 2010/11 winners were ManUre with 80.  So I'm thinking we can expect some upsets this season.

Agreed on his reaction.  Especially considering the move to pull Coutinho and put in Lambert.  Looks like it paid off.

And on a funny note, anyone see the bird poop into Ashley Young's mouth?!?!?!  Hilarious.

To quote one of my favourite childhood bands The Sex Pistols - "Oh you silly thing
You've really gone and done it now"

I was just starting to enjoy watching Pool....now they have signed Balotelli. Didnt they learn anything from the Suarez years?!!

He is a detestable player, petulant, immature and a cancer to all the teams he has played with...including his national team

There is a reason he was on sale...

Mr Rodgers...this is a bad decision

I will now have to revert to hoping he fails in all his games....sorry Pool

I am VERY nervous about this.  I would have preferred Falcao, who had be rumored along with Mario.  While I would hope Rodgers can control him, others haven't been able to either so I don't know why he thinks he can.

Oh boy.

Oh boy.

Looks like they want some kind of "behavior" clause in the contract.  Whether it will hold any weight is another story.

So I really don't understand the MLS.  New England and Chicago were hoping to get Jermaine Jones.  It all came down to a "blind draw" between the two teams.  Both teams were put into a hat and New England was drawn.  WTF is that all about?

Yeah, that makes no sense at all. It seems like if comes down to a draw the player should have some say.

And your post above about the naughty boy clause for Balotelli's contract made me lol.

You going to be able to catch today's match?

From what I understand, the players are MLS property and the teams vie for them.  In this case, since there were two, this "blind draw" was the official solution.  I don't understand why the player doesn't have the say.  Odd.

I hope to catch the match, but I'm going into a meeting in 10 which is scheduled to last most of the rest of the day.

This will be one of our first big matches.  Not easy!

Platini is an idiot.  This will not do him any favors if he truly wants to try to defeat Blatter for the FIFA spot.

Ugh.  At this point, the Mario experiment is not going well.  Not helping that Daniel continues to be injured and therefore affecting the formation of 4-3-3 with Sturride-Sterling-Balotelli up top.

Fortunately, ManUre continues to look horrible.

What kind of point rate are Chelsea and Man City on?  Will either hit 90?  If so, they will win easily.  Lots of evidence to show that seasons after WC rarely hit higher than 85.

Balotelli has been a cancer wherever he has played and i dont get the whole brilliance thing for him - he misses boat loads of chances....gives very little effort and upsets the team chemistry....i wouldnt take him if he was free...

Nervous about how horrible the CL match against Real Madrid can go today.  Even Gerrard said that RM can embarrass us.

Welp, it could have been worse.  It could have been the 7-1, 6-0 or 7-0 slaughters that happened yesterday.

Sort of....i think Rodgers is a victim of premature success - they were not meant to be as good last year or compete to potentially win the EP. I think that it has given the Kop and the owners a false sense of where they should be and that has created this concern. You lost Suarez and also Sturridge to injury...they created a lot of opportunities and scored most of the goals - Sterling cannot carry that load by himself. The "buys" have been interesting - i HATE Ballotelli - he is a cancer and has that history everywhere he goes...he IS NOT a world class talent - i've never seen it and dont get that label for him. You can see the frustration on the other players faces when he does not move or work to create....its the anti- Suarez method of playing up front...

The other imports have not gelled...it will take time

I hope that patience prevails - Rodgers has the right philosophy but in todays day and age of instant gratification their is a danger that they make a change based on false presumptions

Mario needs to go.  I really hope that they don't can Rodgers.  We have been screwed with Sturridge being injured essentially the entire first half of the season.  And now that we are out of CL, I can only hope we do well in the domestic cups and HOPEFULLY get up close to the top 4.  Although with the way it looks now we will be lucky to qualify for Europa league next year.
