Total Time = 3h 06m 22s
Overall Rank = 2/2
Age Group = Aquabike
Age Group Rank = 1/1
Pre-race routine:

Got up crazy early (3:15) to drive to Greenwood. Ate waffles and oatmeal, drank diet coke and gatorade.
Event warmup:

A little 10 minute run and ~300 yards of swimming.
Swim
  • 27m 27s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 18s / 100 yards
Comments:

What a rough swim. Aquabikers were in the 7th wave, and all previous waves had 4 minute intervals. But for whatever reason, they started us just 2 minutes after the wave in front. That meant that 100 yards in I was swimming all over people. It was like that th erest of the way. Got kicked in the face. And, rounding the last bouy, I swam into a girl who was treading water. We knocked skulls pretty hard (still have a bump on my forehead), and when I came up, it looked like she was going down. But then she popped up and said she was OK. Lost maybe 5 seconds there.

Didn't feel great at the start, because of not enough warm up, probably. But after 10 minutes I settled in nicely.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

6th fasted T1 on the day
What would you do differently?:

Nuthin.
Bike
  • 2h 37m 49s
  • 56.17 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

PR HIM bike by ~10 minutes. And on a hilly course to boot. And without race wheels. And with heavy-ass PT wheels. Oh yeah...204 watts average.
What would you do differently?:

Race wheels! I got passed by th eother aquabike race at mile 49...he ended up beating my by about 1.5 minutes. With different wheels, it would have been a different race.
Transition 2
  • 01m 28s
Comments:

Having just finished the aquabike race, it was pretty tempting to pack it in.
Run
  • 1h 50m 6s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 24s  min/mile
Comments:

Warmdown run. Just steady...never pushing. Super tight legs from pushing the bike, but otherwise fine.

Unofficial 4:57:56 HIM. On a hilly course.
Post race
Event comments:

So I 'm pretty excited for B2B. I sub 11 hour race is looking extremely doable. With some race wheels (I've rented a set of Zipp 1080s for the race) and on a flat course, 5:45 at least on the bike should be easily within my range. Add a sub 4 hour marathon and a 45 minute sim (its a completely down-current swim, and that adds up to 10:45 with conservative transitions.

So, you raced the aquabike and then stuck around for the 13.1 mile run anyway?  You are a rockstar!  That was a smoking bike.

Thanks! Yeah...it was a training day for Beach to Battleship. I wanted to do a longish run on fatigued legs, so by racing the aquabike, I made sure I went hard on the bike.

Next year you should definitely sign up for the full event, trainin race or not.  It sounds as if you could've, should've podiumed?

Wow, this is the first BT race report I've read where I can say Race Wheels would've made a legitimate difference.

Congrats on an excellent training race.

So were you the dude in BT gear?  Saw somebody on the run course, but still don't know who it was.  Pretty sweet training day.

Good work!

I would have been about 7th in my AG...

But I've always wanted to do an aquabike race.

Great time for a long training day!

BTW, I did check the tide tables for the inlet where B2B swim course is held and looks like we'll be swimming at the height of the flood tide..Maybe you'll go sub-40?

The B2B site predicts a 40 minute swim. I'm thinking I could probably go 45. BUt who knows, really? Any idea what the current is? I'm thinking you could probably float and beat the cutoff.

Smoking fast times in the water and the bike ... all portends well for B2B.

Any tweaks in your nutrition based upon your 'unofficial' run?

I did the YMCA oly there a few years ago..IIRC, current was a couple of knots which is strong enough to account for some smoking fast swim times. Tide tables said we should be swimming right at max flood. oh, yes.
