Subject: swim mask vs goggles

this past season I purchased a swim mask out of pure curiosity and really like it.  However, I don't see a lot of people wearing them at events.  Are they just too dorky looking or is there a legit reason why people don't use them more often? They are much more comfortable than goggles and  they seal to your face really well.

I just got a pair of the Aqua Sphere goggles and love them, so far.  Yeah, I feel kind of like a dork and I know others are probably thinking it ((, but it helps calm me down in the open water to be able to see better.

I see a lot of masks like that actually.    the mask you have looks a lot like the SEAL mask that is pretty popular for tri's.  Maybe a bit more bulkier and therefore farther away from your face and it will increase drag in the water.  But hey, if its more comfortable and it works for you, keep doing it.

What I dont see are swim masks w/ a face skirt that covers the nose.  I only know of two that arent 'dive' masks that have this feature (The Raven and the Bandit).  I prefer the face skirt over a nose clip and would like more options for a larger face.

I wear a small profile Speedo mask. Make sure that you read the "mask" part. I do not wear a small profile Speedo!

I really like it as opposed to goggles. Mush more comfy. My wife says it is the dorkiest thing ever made though.

I personally wouldn't wear a mask because it wouldn't be as hydrodynamic (or comfortable) as my Vanqs. And it would probably rip off on every flip turn in practice.

I hear alot of people preferring the "mask" because you get better visibility.  However,  the people that I have talked to do not come from a swimming background.  Coming from a swimming background myself I can not put that big thing on my face....I prefer my goggles that I grew up with  (just what I am use to)

The nice thing about the mask is if you get kicked in the face, the mask pushes on bone instead of your eye socket. With that said, I tried a mask similar to the one in your picture for an oly tri this year. It leaked.... and thus I had water that collected in the mask splashing into my eyes every time I took a breath. It worked fine in practice, but for whatever reason I couldn't get it to seal during the race. My eyes were bright red for 2 days after the race. I'm back to goggles.

I love my swim mask.  I wear contacts and goggles seem to bother me, plus I feel I have a better field of view with the mask

You don't need a better view of the field when you are in front...

I used to wear a swim mask, but decided to stop wearing it once I started swimming more seriously. I found that the extra weight of the mask creates drag in the water. It is also harder to breathe with the nosepiece.

If you really want to wear the mask, enjoy it; however, I have found that goggles are so much easier to use.

The "mask" that is pictured is the Aquasphere SealXP. Unlike a mask used for diving, your nose is uncovered. I have 2 of these, one dark and one clear. Other goggles give me terrible headaches, as you can see from the pic, the pressure is distributed to your cheekbones and forehead. All things cosidered, the additional drag from this type of mask is a non-issue and as far as looks go, as long as they work, I don't care.

I swear by my mask - XP. Goggles make my eyes look like Marty Feldman's after about 20 mins of swimming. The mask is easier on my sockets because the brunt of the pressure is on my cheeks/forehead. I see masks at races though--- I think some peeps like 'em better in OWS for higher visability purposes.

I've been a swimmer my whole life and always hated the nose piece on goggles.  I didn't/don't have a big nose and even after a nosejob, they still give me problems and leave a deep imprint on the bridge of my nose.  when i tried a friends AquaSphere mask about 5 yrs ago, I was sold.  I see lots of people at tris and a few in masters that use them.  I want to try the slightly smaller version for my next pair, but they are incredibly comfortable and no nose issues!

(personally, i think using noseplugs is more dorky than a swim mask.)

I started swimming this year...  1st I bought a swim mask because I thougt it would be easier to get used to.

I lost the 1st swim mask and decided to try goggles.  After some research, lots of people like the kaiman and I purchased a pair.

I have not gone back to the swim goggles since.

I have a pair similar to that for training.  They don't leak as much, they are far more comfortable to me, I can see better.

Therefore, I use them in races too.  Nothing new on race day!
