kraut_fan - 2008-10-10 1:19 PM you understand that this is illegal right, beyond having ethics problems..

Yeah, but's like that everywhere in corporate America - my sister works like 14 hour days and orders lunch and dinner in. People work from the crack of dawn til late at night and don't really leave for lunch. It's just the way it is. Only with "hourly" folk is it really enforced cuz no one wants to pay for overtime. Or unions. But most office jobs aren't unionized.

Exactly.

But you can not be fired for taking breaks... If you get your work done... and still take breaks you are fine.

Fired, no. Not promoted or given a raise because it looks like you don't work hard enough? Yes.

Yeah but management would need to specifically communicate that to you, if they were not happy with your performance. Like in a review, they would need to say "Wurkit, we feel you are not putting in the hours required to do your job effectively" or whatever. Then she could clarify that she was expected to work 12 hour days instead of the 8 hour days she thought she would be working when hired on. They have to tell you, they can't just expect you to be a mind-reader. Especially when you're getting the job done.

Technically, yes. But I think you guys are trying to live in a dream world. From a management point of view, you shouldn't have to tell your workers to work harder than they are to succeed. Impress me, and I'll make sure you're rewarded.

Sounds like she IS succeeding... getting her job done well. And they just want her to be there extra hours. I agree that management should reward top performers, but not at the expense of working employees to death just because you can.

For the most part, yes. But that is part of the reason why I want to leave. I don't think I'm very well suited for this job. They would do better to hire someone who doesn't need to ask so many questions, esp. in this market, when my boss is too busy to help me when I need her to, and not 3 days later when I can get her pinned down. I try to get help elsewhere, but most of the time, I need her. And I can't get to her. Even though I HATED our general counsel, if he were still here, I could go to him, as much as that sucks. I'm not a lawyer, I'm not a negotiator, I'm not trained in any of this, and I don't think I should be here. It'd be one thing if we were all doing well, and no one was stressed out all the time; I'd feel less bad about needing help and training. But no one has the time to help me b/c everyone is running around like a nutbag.

I work as efficiently as I possibly can and get the vast majority of my work done in a record amount of time. BUt the small piece leftover is where I need help and can't get the help I need. And that small piece is always the stuff that matters the most - the stuff that's beyond my abilities. I'm honestly not sure what they were thinking when they promoted me, except that it was quicker and cheaper than finding someone else.
