TriAgainJim - 2008-10-31 4:15 PM It is the end of November and could be very cold.  The lake will be around 60 degrees and if the ambit temperature is around 60 degrees, the wind chill on the bike it will result in it being very cold.  I am not worried about the run because the perceived temperature while running is around 20 degrees above the actual temperature.  I do not run fast enough to worry about wind chill.

Sounds brutal!  Although truth be told, I think I'd rather do triathlons in cold weather.  Hot weather does me in so I probably will never do a summer triathlon.  Laughing

There will be a swim clinic on November 15th and 23rd at Bonelli Park.  I'm planning to attend the Nov 23rd swim clinic and I can report back then whether or not we will have to swim though algae.  Hopefully not, that sounds really gross!

Hey folks - I've yet to do a triathlon, althouth I've been training very regularly on bike/run/swim (pool) and am eyeing this as my first.

I unfortunately have zero open water experience thus far, and most groups training at the beach in Santa Monica have stopped training as water temps are a bit low.

I'm a decent pool swimmer - I can definitely swim continuously for 60 minutes at 2:00/100m, and average 1:50/100m for 40 minutes, which is a typical workout for me.

Do you think I'd be ok to just "go for it" and get my first open water experience at the lake, or is that a bad idea? (if it were an ocean swim, I'd definitely say bad idea, but I'm wondering if the lake is easier.)

my first OWS was in a triathlon, and while it was a bit overwhelming at first, you should be able to get comfortable once the pack thins out a bit.  You would probably be best off starting near the back of the pack, that way you won't have to worry about so many people being around you.  I would also highly recommend a wetsuit if you don't have one already, not only because the water is probably going to be pretty cold, but also because it helps you stay afloat if you have to stop during your swim to get your bearings straight.

X2 to most of the above comment (esp. given the OP's pace in pool swims...definitely a solid swimmer).

A wetsuit would normally be close to a must-have, given the time of year and likely water temps, but some people react badly to them first time out. You can even injure yourself if the fit is wrong (I managed to mildly strain a shoulder in a trial swim in a suit that turned out to be a size too small...despite what the manufacturer's sizing chart said). If you have any chance at all to just get in the water in your suit prior to the tri--even if it is to go down to the ocean and just swim a few strokes to make sure you are comfortable and really have the proper fit--that would be a good thing.

Might do this tri after all...as a relay.

My wife has been ruled out of running by her orthopedist for the next four weeks with post-tib tendonitis. She was going to do the Turkey Tri and I was going to "sherpa" for her, but hadn't signed up yet. With the injury, it looked like a no-go. But it occured to me today that I could do the run and she could still get to do the swim-bike. We're mulling over the expense of a relay entry at this point (esp. because we're already out the cost of the City of Angels half mary early next month which she is already registered for and now can't run) and might decide to do it together.

Hi - just to let you know, there are two swim clinics being held at the lake.  One is on Nov. 15th and the other one is on Nov 23rd.  Cost is $50 for a 3-hour clinic.

Dang, I can't make either of them. I'm a radiology resident, and I'm still in peak call schedule, so I'm literally working almost every other weekend day. I think I'm going to just "go for it" though. I'm going to start in the back and go wide - the only thing I'm afraid of is that I'll catch up to the slowest pack and then be forced to swim through all the bodies -  but obviously if I start in the middle, I'll get plowed! Doh!

Bummer.  This is my first tri so I plan to be on the outside sort of in the middle.  I don't want people swimming over me or kicking me so I figure that's probably the best spot.  There will be a pre-race course review on Nov. 29th but I don't know if there will be an opportunity to do a OWS.  I'm not sure what usually takes place at pre-race course reviews since I've never been to one.  Good luck at the tri!

Hello - I did the swim clinic today.  There was no algae at all on the surface of the water.  The water is murky but that's normal for a lake.  The water temperature was very cold...I don't know the exact temperature but I will say I was very happy to have my wetsuit and my neoprene cap.  Hope that helps you a bit.

I rode the bike course yesterday and it is not an easy course.  You are ether climbing a hill or going down one and it is hard to get in any kind of rhythm.  There is only one relatively flat section which is by the airport, but it has a lot of wind.  However, there are a couple of fast downhill runs.  I was going over 40mph on one downhill, which was fun, and scary.  Make sure everything is tightened on your bike...

I got mine up to 48 last year on that hill. I was a bit crazy. It was a little scary.....but fun!

Unfortunatley I had a nasty crash earlier in the year while training for a race. That wreck ruined my race plans for the year due to an injury. But I am healthy again. However, now I am gun shy when come to hills. I will probably ride my brakes this year.

I plan to be conservative and take it easy on that hill, I have no desire to wipe out on that hill especially when surrounded by a ton of riders!  Overall, it's not a bad ride.

Thanks, I am. I have been loking forward to this since I got back into training in July. I am bummed. I wanted a good result. Now I just want to feel good enough to get through it.

Well, if it was meant to be, it will be.

I also feel bad because I talked two friends into doing it with me. I don't want to flake on them.

I'm in the 35-39 group.  If I see you, I'll say hello.  I have a blue Scattante bike with yellow/black tires.

There is also a pre-race review today from 10 to 12pm which I will go to just to make sure I've got all bases covered.
