Pre-race routine:

This was my first race in some time. When the alarm went off this morning it was still dark. I considered staying in bed but I didn't. Drank some vit H2O on the drive over. Ate 1/2 a breakfast bar.
Event warmup:

Visited with friends and co-workers. One of my best friends from work called me mid-week ALL excited about this race. He didn't make it. Forgot to set his alarm. My buddy Scott and I talked and the gun went off.

Comments:

MILE 1: Thru the Foo Dogs (sculptures). Felt good. Watch had me at 7:33 pace. A little too fast but I didn't pay for it.
MILE 2: Mud. Mud. and Mud. The trail was narrow and I had to pass the people who started out too quick. Happens every time.
MILE 3: Creeks! And they were wide and full of cold water. I've done this race 3 other times. I've never experienced the mud and water like this though....it was a whole new experience. Think Advanture Race not local 5K. A guy actually fell into the creek - up to his neck. Brrrr! The water was knee level.
MILE 4: Got away from the river bottom and onto some dry trail. Ahhhh! My buddy Scott was running the opposite direction at the Sundecker turn-around and handed me a cup of water. Nice of him!
MILE 5: The hills in the open field were a challenge but I pushed thru.
What would you do differently?:

My shoes and socks were wet and caked with mud. Trail Shoes needed. The heavy, wet shoes didn't hurt me too much - I'm a big guy, but dry would have been nicer.

I'd rate my effort okay. Can't race in the mud and expect a good elapsed time but the race was a nice challenge.
Post race
Warm down:

Visited with friends and ate a 'nanner.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The mud. The creeks. Wet gear.

Event comments:

This race has been around for a long time. Allerton Park is unique and beautiful. It is great they allow us to run there once a year. No complaints.

My feet were cold and wet on the drive home. Take dry shoes and socks if you do this race. AND if you get the chance, do this race!

Wow, this brings back some memories, having grown up/gone to school in Champaign. That would be a pretty nice race. Sounds like a race to tell your kids about

Nice job!
