Subject: G.I. issues and Ironman

Hello All

I am having a major freak out with my Ironman coming up in less that three weeks.  For about the last 2 weeek I have been having some major G.I. issues, having to go between 4 to 6 times a day and the matter being pretty watery. Needless to say most of my remaining training has come to a halt and I am feeling kind of weak from not being able to hold on to nutrients. I went my physicain last week and was prescribed a antibiotic because he thought it was a parasite of some kind.  It hasn't improved much and I am headed back to the physician today....has anyone out there experiecned this condition for this long and if any advice and be offered I would really appreciate it.  I have trained so hard and long for this to happen now and it is really making me depressed!

Thanks

Mark

I was having major GI issues with mostly when marathon training.  But I also experienced it with IM training.  It usually happens for me in the heat/ humidity moreso than in cooler, dryer temps.  I thought it was a hydration issues, but after trial and error I nailed it down to that, as well as the type of sports drink I was consuming. I found that Powerade had waaay too much sugar in it and not enough electrolytes and that was making me sick.  Gatorade was a little better but I still had stomach problems with that.  I also eat a lot of fiber and have tried to decrease my fiber intake and that has made a difference as well.  You might want to try altering a few things- like your gels, sports drinks, diet, etc and see if that helps.  Although since you're only a few weeks out from your IM you may not want to try something new.

Edited:  I just noticed that you've only had the problems for the past 2 weeks.  Have you done anything different that could be the culprit?

Hello,

Thanks for the reply...I haven't done anything different that I can think of (doc asked me the same thing)  I've used Hammer gels and drinks for the last few seasons and I have never had a problem with them.

Usually a sign of parasites/virus or you are not eating properly through out the day.

Did you change your diet??

No..my diet is the same as usual, pretty healthy overall.  Chicken, fish, a lot of brown rice and veggies and fruit.  Dont' drink that much alchohol and not really sure what to make of this.  Hope I can get some better answers from my doctor today as this will make my upcoming race a bit difficult.

Not to be too obvious here, but did you have a stool sample sent to the lab?  Or did the doc just say "based on your symptoms sounds like a parasite"

I had a similar stomach bug - almost 2 weeks. My dr. said it was a virus and to let it run it's course. By day 10 or so my bathroom trips became less frequent until over about 3 days I was back to normal. Stay hydrated! I was drinking lots of gatorade and when my bloodwork came back, it showed I was not dehydrated even after all the time spent in the bathroom. Good luck - think about how much lighter you'll be for the race!

you may want to keep a food log to help pinpoint what may be triggering this, just in case it's not a virus.
