1- Healthcare.  It needs to be completely revamped.  Unfortunately it will not happen because so much money has been invested in the current stupid system.  Just keep hoping for nationalized health care people.  Trust me 1-it won't happen because the country can't afford it and 2- It would be far worse than our current system.  There is a reason the Candians come to Florida in the winter and pay cash for their elective surgery and its not because their nationalized heathcare is so wonderful.  I could go on and on about this but I dont' want to hijack

2-health care

3-healthcare

4-English is the official language of the US.  You want state based aide? learn the lingo.  You wanna be a citizen?  learn the lingo.

scoobysdad - 2008-11-06 10:57 AM  2. Require sort of national ID for every person. It would be required to vote, get a job, apply to college and perhaps other purposes.

This is an interesting item to make your top 4 - can you tell us why?

Because I believe nothing should be more sacred than the sanctity of a vote, and I truly believe that sanctity is being regularly betrayed by fraud. Much of this fraud could be eliminated by simply requiring each voter to show a valid ID, which is done in Wisconsin and many other states.

Also, I believe your rights and benefits in this country start with citizenship (unless here by some other legal means.) The occasions I cited are reasonable checkpoints at which time you should be able to show proof of citizenship.

1) ID needed to vote even if already registered. (we need ID for everything but the very thing that is nationally scrutinized)

2) Make dropping out of high school a crime. (more educated peeps make for a more productive country).

3) Mandate 4 week vacations for all. (and if it would cause hardship to a company, govt would subsidize).

4) Taxes collected from the top paid Hollywood and Sports celebrities would be put toward the more noble yet underpaid professions such as teaching, police work, and fire fighting.

Just read this after my post. Agree with Scoobysdad. -- however, as a fellow Wisconsinite, no one carded my family at the polling station...not ever. Hmmmmmm....

Wow, I am shocked at a lot of posts I have read here. Mandatory service after high school graduation is unconstitutional and is a huge encroachment on civil liberties; this move would only be conducted by a totalitarian government and is called conscription. As far as banning guns, I cannot trust a government that tries to take away the citizen's means of overthrowing it. Gun control is loved by statist nations, like Nazi Germany, China, etc. Besides, owning a gun is largest deterrent against violent crime; police are not on every street corner to protect you. If you ban guns from law abiding citizens, the criminals are not going to give up their guns, and now you have a nation of unprotected citizens (http://www.lp.org/issues/gun-laws). I could go on and on, but here are my four things I would change.

1. Fiscal Conservatism & Accountability
2. Limited Government
3. Constitutional & Individual Rights Guardianship
4. Foregin Policy realism

So wait, my hard earned money, in the form of taxes, has to go to pay for some people who cannot put down the fork and go out and exercise? Or to people who need lung cancer treatment because they chose to smoke for 30 years? I believe that is a ridiculous notion, everyone should provide for their own healthcare. I go to the doctor only when the Air Force forces me to, for my annual check up, and I stay completely healthy otherwise, because I take care of myself. Get the government out of healthcare, the free market will take care of things itself. Dr. Ron Paul advocates this very idea, and he has been in the medical field for decades, and has delivered over 4000 babies.

I have to agree.  My husband's family immigrated to America after the war and they lost several of his family members to the SS as they rolled through the Netherlands.  Given that they were the "ideal" (blonde and blue eyed) they were required to join up or be killed.  With no guns to defend themselves, they lost several male family members.  To this day they have a strong respect for responsible gun ownership.

Oops, sorry, Sarah. I meant to say that voters are NOT required to show ID in Wisconsin-- which, like you, I think is preposterous.

PennState - 2008-11-07 12:55 PM Oh and another point.... for those who are against pharmaceutical ads on TV, I'm assuming that you would suggest a ban of all beer ads on TV as well right? Certainly alcohol is more dangerous to the population than pharma ads? no?

I'm not advocating banning drug ads because they are dangerous. I'm saying that if my doctor doesn't know about some drug and I'm telling them I should take, then why am I even bothering with a doctor?

You make a great point. TV ads hurt me personally, as it is troubling to have the pt. tell me what drug is best from the ad.... but I still support their right to advertise... think of all the companies we let advertise.... injury lawyers, beer companies, fast food etc, etc.... just don't like singling out the drug companies....

Drug companies wouldn't be singled out. Tobacco companies already can't advertise on tv

How come alcohol doesn't get the same scrutiny as tobacco?

Just playing devil advocate.  Since I like my bottle of wine quite abit.

2) Strict interpretation of the Second Amendment.   Eliminate all non-hunting guns and all guns that are not related to a "well-regulated militia."  Require permits for all firearms purchased for any reason. Make criminal penalties for carrying any handgun so onerous as to make it foolish to have a gun.

I think that's enough for now.  Flame away!

What would this accomplish?

Yeah, the criminals that didn't give away their guns would kill more people. Just because you make it law, doesn't mean people won't have it anymore. It would just make the black market for guns more dangerous and expensive, leading to more crime; at the same time leaving law abiding gun owners without guns anymore, vulnerable to criminals with guns.

Look, if logic and Common sense aren't tolerated in the House or Senate, I don't know why you think it's ok here!!

Have any data to back this up?

Back in 1966 a loony on a tower in in Texas armed with a couple good old bolt action hunting rifles killed 14 people and wounded more than double that. It was done with the exact same type of rifle your average hunter would use on large game like Deer.

The problem with gun control laws is that only the people that abide by the law in the first place will listen. The bad guys will not as they already don't care about the rules.

Did you know that your average concealed carry permit holder is far less likely to commit a crime than the average joe? They pass a state and FBI background check, the average citizen does not go through the same scrutiny.

So when was the last time you heard of a citizen who is licensed to carry just go out and shoot some one? Do these stories outweigh the incidents of people without permits being involved in shootings?

In the end, what people feel vs. what is backed up by statistics are two different things.
