Subject: Running with Julie Andrews
I went out for one of my longest runs in quite a while this afternoon - 8 miles, mostly along the Mississippi here in St. Paul and Minneapolis.  It was a great day for a November run being in the mid 30s, with no wind at all.  Very nice indeed.  I learned along the way, though, that the tempo of a number of the songs from The Sound of Music are either right on or very close to the tempo of my running cadence.

I Have Confidence - check
Doe, A Deer - check
So Long, Farewell - check
Sixteen Going on Seventeen - check

Unfortunately, these songs are pretty repetitive, and since I don't know all of the words to all of the verses...

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides what you see I have confidence in me!

Strength doesn't lie in numbers
Strength doesn't lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber
When you wake up
Wake up! It's healthy!

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides what you see I have confidence in me!

Strength doesn't lie in numbers
Strength doesn't lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber
When you wake up
Wake up! It's healthy!

I have confidence in sunshine
I have confidence in rain
I have confidence that spring will come again
Besides what you see I have confidence in me!

Strength doesn't lie in numbers
Strength doesn't lie in wealth
Strength lies in nights of peaceful slumber
When you wake up
Wake up! It's healthy!

Yep, that was going on in my head for a few miles.

Bah!  Man Cards are overrated.  It never got me anything I couldn't get otherwise.  Besides, being in music for so long, some kind of music is going to be in my head at any given time.  Sometimes it's the Talking Heads.  Sometimes it's Julie Andrews.

Perhaps I'll make up those testosterone points by walking around the house naked and grabbing myself in front of the wife and grunting.  Will that help?

As soon as I read this, I thought "The guys on BT are going to be all over this poor slob for his man card." But I think it's great that you run with show tunes in your head.  On one century, since I don't ride my bike with an iPod, I sang the entire soundtrack of 'Evita.'  And yes, some of it was outloud.  At least the prairie dogs seemed to like it. I noticed that when I was passed, the others tended to pass very quickly.

I sing musicals all the time when I'm running.  It keeps me going pretty well and I like being able to sign along.  I have gotten a few crazy looks and chuckles from people who pass me, but I don't mind.

I don't run with mp3 players.  This just came into my head spontaneously.

Do the voices say anything about Julie Andrews or the Nazis? Just curious....

Does anyone know any free programs where you can analyze the tempo of tracks? I'd love to get some the correct tempo for my SwimP3 player.

I'm thinking that Doe A Dear sounds like just the right tempo for a run... i would just worry for my sanity if it was stuck in my head for multiple miles....

This is what I'll need for race season when I am forced to run without the IPOD...spontaneous internal music! Actually I know what you mean, when I was doing the run portion of my OLY I was playing my son's piano sonata in my head over and over. It got me through!

Sometimes when i run, my stride increases or decreases based on the music I'm listening to, I just instinctively try to land my feet on all downbeats. Perhaps you just changed the song's original tempo to match your running, since you weren't actually listening to it?  Just a thought based on my personal experiences...

I certainly change the tempo of some songs a little bit to more closely fit my cadence.  It works better for 16 going on 17, which is relatively close to my cadence, than say At Last by Etta James would be.  Each of these songs weren't far off of my cadence though, so I couldn't help but wondering if Rogers and Hammerstein figured out that that specific tempo was what made people feel syrupy sweet in the early 60s.

I sang the Ghostbusters song in my head over and over again during the mile swim at state masters swim meet this past spring.  It was the last song I heard on my Ipod before I jumped in the pool and it stuck in my head for the whole 27 minutes.  However, after the race, I deleted it off pretty fast because I was so sick of it!

Just like Mom always said to make sure you're wearing clean underwear in case you're ever in an accident and end up in an emergency room, now she has to warn to wear clean underwear AND make sure you don't have Rogers and Hammerstine on your mP3...in case you get in an accident.

Dude, at least be listening to Sweeny Todd...and not Annie.

But I admit, West Side Story is the greatest musical. Saying anything against Bernstein is reason for a fight; Tonight, tonight...

Yeah, I downloaded a pretty good free trial once. beaTunes, I think it was called. Do a search for BPMs or tempo or whatnot - it'll go through your entire iTunes library and analyze it. The beaTunes actually did moods and stuff, but I didn't play around with it enough to get into it.

What I find frustrating about the BPMs is that the mood of the song and/or the subject matter affect my cadence as much or more than the tempo. There are plenty of down or depressing songs with the "right" BPM that would bring my workout to a sluggish, scraping, grinding messy halt. Gimme an upbeat tune and I'm chugging along happily, even if it isn't quite the right tempo. Julie Andrews would, for the most part, fit quite nicely in there.

Completely an aside, but funny: there's a realtor around here (NH/VT, where the von Trapps came and settled) by the name of Chris von Trapp - no idea if he's an actual relation, but he uses music symbols all over his advertising!

Try a 2 year old with Rubber Duckie in your head during a race.

Wonder pets! Wonder pets! We're on our way...

When I don't have kid's songs stuck in my head I like Aerosmith for random intervals. BPM are all over the place, but I sprint faster as he builds. When he takes it up more, so do I.

I've got show tunes on my mp3 (including Sweeney Todd) but not The Sound of Music. I'm going to have to get that downloaded and listen to it a few times, so when I do my half mary in a couple of weeks, it's fresh in my mind! It will be much easier to sing to then Sweeney Todd!
