I didn't want to wear any merchandise before my IMs not because of any superstitions, but because the shirt/hat/jersey is like a medal, and why would you wear a medal for something you didn't do? I also don't stand in line for finisher gear, because the IM shirt/jersey even without the "finisher" word implies finishing. Why would someone wear one without having done it? I don't get comments about my shirts that maybe I watched the race, I get comments about doing it. We had our Patriot's Half canceled this year as well, and they sent us socks and the shirt in the mail. I don't even feel like wearing that shirt. Why would I want to wear the shirt of a race I haven't done? :-) My buddy is even worse, as he hasn't done his first half yet, so the shirt is for a distance he hasn't done. And this is for a race we were signed up for, and didn't have any choice about not doing. :-)

Extreme Veteran 438 Surprise, AZ | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I use to think the M-Dot was a big deal but after I surrounded myself with triathletes and how large the M-dot corp. has gotten to be is seems as though I see it so many times that it loses its wow factor and I honestly don't look twice if a see a m-dot anymore. A while back I saw a guy wearing a BADWATER t-shirt, that "wow'd" me so I had to ask. He didn't race nor was he there, but a friend raced it and got everyone a t-shirt. He never thought twice about wearing. |

Veteran 107 Vancouver, WA | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I did a walk through of the expo at IMAZ, but I refused to buy anything with M-Dot on it for myself until after the race. I did by my two boys shirts and am glad I did because most of the kid stuff was gone by Saturday. I think the same goes for getting anywhere near the finish line before the actual race. I avoided being anywhere close to the finish line while my son ran the kids race. I was still able to watch him run and finish. I just didn't want to be too close. This is probably just paranoid behavior, but it worked for me. Gotta go...I think someone is watching me type this message. |

Regular 111 | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? Somebody has gotta be buying the stuff, because when I went back on Monday morning after IMLP it was almost all sold out pretty early. If i diddnt get a hat and shirt before the race I wouldnt have any bop gear. They still had a few m-dot cigarette boxes left. Buy it tuck it away and wear it later. Diddnt happen to see these either, must have sold out Edited by seankun 2008-12-06 7:35 AM (480adf382f232_51588n.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 480adf382f232_51588n.jpg (14KB - 20 downloads) |

New user 24 | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? Bought a IM FL coffee cup in 2006...watching the race inspired me to sign-up for IMAZ 08. I was/am a fan of IM, and saw no problem having IM merchandise. Now I'm a Finisher and wear gear that says "Finisher". I bought IMAZ merchandise for my wife and kids...they may not have run the race, but they sure as heck suffered through a half year of training and were part of the "event". So as far as merchandise, as long as it doesn't say "finisher", I could care less....but I wouldn't let anyone call me an Ironman until after I finished the race. |

Cycling Guru 15134 Fulton, MD | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I've worn a race item before finishing the race only once ... and I am sure it is the reason I do not perform well at that location. So never again. (I got my Boston jacket from the '07 race pre-ordered early to avoid the crowd at the expo and wore it a few times out before the race). Your money, your clothes, but I do not ever wear schwag from an event until AFTER I finish it .... my superstition. |

Extreme Veteran 787 Glendora, CA. | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? My observation of the IMAZ November store was that people were coming out of the Expo tent with large bags of IMAZ IM stuff. Tempting the "IM Gods"? Who knows! It is a personal choice. I choose not to wear anything from a race unless I earned it. But, I can clearly see why someone would wear something from a race as a motivational technique (and I don't fault them or criticize them for it!). They are using the wearing of that gear in a positive way. As a side note, I didn't doubt if some of ithe IM gear from the Expo was bought with the intention of putting it up on E-Bay. Come on.....I saw one person with 4 or 5 jerseys all the same size. So I wasn't surprised to see an earlier post that someone purchased something on E-Bay already! |

Elite 2796 Texas | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I'm sitting here wearing a Triathlon 101 race series shirt (gift from a BTer who volunteered at the race in California). I was registered for the Texas race. SO clearly by wearing the shirt early the whole organization went under... and it's my fault. It's a nice tech shirt though.. Edited to add: It's not a finishers shirt. And I wouldn't wear a finishers shirt for a race I didn't do. As for the M-Dot stuff, I think it's a silly thing to worry about. If you have time to worry over that, call your coach ASAP and tell him you aren't training enough. :)

Master 1686 Royersford, PA | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I think of it this way, if I buy IMxx gear and then flame out and DNF at that race, I'm not going to wear it again anyway, so its always good karma to wait until afterwards. It is a perfect hedge, saves money if things go wrong, and if things go right the stuff has that word "FINISHER" on it. But I bought my sons and dad IM stuff and I would be somewhat offended it they didn't wear it, so while personally I wouldn't wear MDot stuff from a race I didn't do yet, I really don't have an issue with it. Besides the more $ WTC and NAS make the from these races, the result is more races they are likely to put on for me to compete in. Edited by southwestmba 2008-12-06 6:21 PM |

Master 1989 New Jersey | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? Funny to read this. I just bought a clearance sale bike jersey from IMLP. The '09 IMLP will be my first IM. I questioned in my mind whether I was justified to wear the jersey. But, I feel the Ironman (or any race) is a journey that starts from the moment you start training for it. So, in a couple weeks, I will be engrossed in the Ironman lifestyle, and thus I'm entitled to wear the shirt. If it was a finisher shirt, or from a different IM, then absolutely not. And I do have some 140.6 stickers around the house as motivation. Not on my car though. Anything that makes it look like I already did the IM is cheesy in my book. |

Elite 2768 Raleigh | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? yea I really do not care what others wear or what I wear. I have a really cool IM Kona 81 sweat shirt I got off ebay, it is really worn and comfy and I wear it all the time. I have a IMKY hat I found in the parking lot this year and I wear it. I have friends who have got me 70.3 Championship hats and I wear them (never been), I even have a ITU pro friend who sends me swag from races (swim caps, bags, shirts) and I use that stuff. It is just clothes... My wife hates her Ultra stuff she gets so she gets a L and gives them to me. I have never nor do I plan to do WS100 but the sleevless fleece jacket is mighty nice... |

Master 2014 Ohio | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I have and have worn 2 "IM" shirts even though I have not completed an Ironman. I went to watch and volunteer at IMKY earlier this year and bought a BT IMKY shirt. It does not have the IM logo on it, so does it count? The second one is the IMKY volunteer shirt I had to wear while volunteering. It's a nice shirt and I like wearing it. I feel entitled since I gave up a weekend going out there and volunteered for 11 hours. As far as wearing any kind of finishers shirt, then no. I DNF'ed a marathon and still wear the shirt but I took a sharpie and marked a big DNF across the front of it. I use it as motovation. |

Alpharetta, Georgia | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? Just a question, which the NFL comment prompted in my mind. Say I was such a Michael Phelps fan that I bought a shirt that said 2008 Olympics. I am a swimmer, but did not actually swim in the Olympics. Will the swim gods seek revenge next time I'm in the pool? How do we feel about wearing a souvineer shirt someone got us when they visited New York? I've never been, but my mom got me one and I wear it. Will the New York gods punish me the first time I visit? See how silly it seems? Also no one answered my question about wearing, say, an Ironman Timex brand watch. Is that okay? My run is depending on it tonight. |

Maybe it's just me living in my area of the world, but I've only bumped into one person wearing IM clothing, and he didn't do the race. I think he said he happened to be in town that weekend and thought the hat looked neat. And practically every time I run, I see him and his wife out walking. I'd rather see him wearing his hat, and get a smile and a good morning, than the couple knobs I've stood in line with at registration decked out in every IM piece of clothing they own and acting all macho. It's just a logo. Still, and just in case, I'm not going to risk swimming next to lisac957 in the NYC triathlon. |

New user 2 Huntersville, NC | Subject: RE: Wear MDOT logo clothes before completing first IM? I say go ahead and wear Mdot merchandise if you're training for one or want to do one. It will inspire and be symbolic of a goal one hopes to attain. Now for race specific gear and definitely finisher clothing, I believe those should be reserved for those who have actually competed in the events. I think it's an individual thing and doesn;t really matter in the long run. That's my two cents worth. |
