Triangle triathlon has moved to Harris County Park. Those who ride in the Cary/Apex area know where it is. Duke Half bike course goes right past the entrance. Definitely better than Crabtree!! I'm in.

Check out the Setup events site for course maps.

Those big bumps in the profile look ominous. Still, this should be a nice event. Will definitely consider it!

Those elevation profiles mean nothing to me unless I compare them to known courses. I've added it to my collection. Triangle looks alot like the hard part of the Duke course...so from this we can conclude that fgump loves hills! Except for the big hump in the middle, it looks easier than Pinehurst. And I bet that hump isn't so bad. Make hills your friend :-)

PS: Over the Mountain was the hardest bike course I've done.

Pinehurst definitely felt like it was either up or down with very little flat. I agree, this route looks easier than that but looks like a couple of 200 ft vertical climbs (or maybe one really long one with a break in the middle). Most of the hills around where I live (between Rt 55 and Jordan Lake) are around 75ft vertical. Still, its just 15 or so miles. For me I seem to have trouble with running up Pinehurst-like hills at the end of a long bike ride (e.g. Pinehurst). Still, if you know what is come you can prepare eh :-) Nice to have a good event without industrial waste in the water (like Crabtree, or is that not fair?) nice and close to home though.

Ha!  Hardly!  I will struggle and cuss from start to finish.  I'm just excited it's in my backyard, and not in Lake Cesspool...er...Crabtree.

I do have to say that I LOVED Pinehurst's bike course this year.  Now it's changing for 2009.  I must've been in a zone on the bike, but I was laughing and smiling out there.

Now that Triangle's moved, I have a new training course.

Mrs. Fatmouse will not be happy. I had crossed this one off my list for several years. Now it is back on.

If it is light out, I can ride my bike to and from the race.

Youbetcha!  Signed up last night.  That and White Lake Sprint I.  This looks to be a reduced season.  Going to see if I can be healed and race strong in 2 sprints.  Might find a third race later in the season.  I just want to play this summer!  Plus, I have less vacation available (taking a trip next week that will eat up one week of my three, the other 2 reserved for July 4th week and Christmas week).

I have not signed up yet, but I plan on doing it. I just signed up for White Lake Sprint 2 (will be my 1st race). Depending on how things are going I plan on doing Triangle (hell living in wake county and having a race so close almost makes it mandatory) I am just going to monitor and see how it is filling up before doing so.  don't want to commit just yet, not knowing how the 1st season is going to turn out.

I feel the same way about it feeling mandatory because it's close and not wanting to committ if I don't have to.

Rode the course yesterday.  It will be a challenge.  Reminds me of an abbreviated Pinehurst.

  • There's the climb out of the park.
  • Then the climb on New Hill-Holleman up past Shearon Harris Visitor's Center,
  • the climb up the other side of the bridge on Friendship Road,
  • a steady climb for the first few miles on Holly Springs-New Hill Road,
  • with a long steep climb a few miles in, then steady climbing until you hit 55 bypass.
  • Then you get a fast downhill followed by the climb up to Avent Ferry.
  • Then a steady climb up past the school, followed by a nice downhill to a swampy area,
  • then a moderate climb up to the Avent Ferry/New Hill-Holleman intersection.  Once you turn right on New Hill/Holleman, you can gun it across the bridge, then you get a slight uphill back to the park entrance.
  • and finally the climbing in the park back to T2.

As my friend said, "It'll keep you honest"

Do you have a bike trainer? If so, get Spinervals Uphill grind. Great hill simulation workout - I swear it feels just like climbing real hills! Put your front wheel on a 4" block to make it even better!

So you're basically saying it's pretty flat right?

Livestrong191 - 2009-04-28 12:14 PM Ok I did Map Sprint triathlon in Hunterville earlier this  year. How do the hills compare to  the triangle race.
Here are the two courses.

Here's MAP.  In summary, plots out at 12.7 miles, 253 feet of ascent, 217 feet of descent

http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=11004&photoid=99912
In MAP, I count what I would call 5 "peaks".  Looks like mostly rollers for the whole course

Here's Triangle.  In summary, 17.6ish miles, 348 feet of ascent, 344 feet of descent.
http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/photos/show-album.asp?albumid=11004&photoid=99913
I count what I would call 5 "peaks" on the Triangle route.  One steady climb that's just about 2.5 miles long, with a short rest, then another quick climb, followed by a nice good downhill almost all the way back to the park (pretty much the last 7 miles).

It looks like the biggest difference is MAP kind of trends downhill then uphill.  That, and Triangle is about 5 miles longer!!

I did this race last year, and a lot of people were complaining about the water.  A change might be nice.  I'm not sure whether or not I will do it again, but I probably will.

I plan on being there.  This will be my first triathlon.  I am excited.  I have driven parts of the bike course a few times, there are a few tough hills on it.  I probably should get out there and ride it a few time before the race.

Go to the Library and get this:  Total Immersion by Terry Laughlin.

Do this:  http://ruthkazez.com/ZeroTo1mile.html while incorporating the TI techniques while you swim.
