I came back from working out one time and saw someone had put a lock on my locker.  I went out into the gym and yelled, "Hey, who the hail put a lock on my locker?!"  Some guy sheepishly say, "Ooops, was that yours?  My bad."

I don't lock mine, I leave my wallet and phone in the car and pull the car key off the ring. So all I have in the locker is the one key. Never had anything stolen, knock on wood, I guess if they really want a new t-shirt....

I guess I'm lucky. The chain of gyms I belong to has locks built into all their lockers.  You simply insert your membership card on the inside of the locker and when you close it you can take the key with you from the outside and it automatically locks.

Before I joined this gym I always locked my stuff.  That said I also workout and live in downtown Chicago and anything not locked down like Fort Knox will disappear in less than a minute.

Do you want your stuff at the end of the day? Then best to lock it.  I almost never feel this way about discussions on BT, but I am having a hard time seeing how locking a LOCKER is a matter of opinion, but whatev...

But I do definitely agree that I wish you'd put something in the lock to indicate the locker is in use (perhaps this is where the etiquette comes in).  I don't care if it's a pencil.  At the LA Fitness I joined for a few months, I would have to sometimes look through 5 lockers before finding an empty one.

I lock mine. I have my swimp3 player in my bag all the time, if i do not use it then I want it locked up TIGHT ! Plus I have my car keys and cell phone.

I wrote my initials on my lock in black permanent ink so I can easily find my locker..........

usually I carry extra locks and when I open a locker only to find someone's stuff in it I put a lock on it and leave.... except this one time in Alabama I didn't make it all the way to the door when some guy came out into the gym and yelled  "hey who the hail put a lock on my locker?"  I sheepishly said  "opps was that yours"  "My bad"

r.maloney - 2009-01-08 12:55 PM Even if you aren't concerned about possible theft, it helps folks quickly identify which lockers are available.  I know the staff at my YMCA frequently close all unused lockers so I often have to go through the annoying process of opening and closing locker after locker in my attempt to find a free one.

it amazes me how many people don't use locks.  i've gone through rows of lockers with no locks, all filled with personal belongings.  a lock is 2 freaking dollars and takes 2 seconds to put on and take off. use one.  if for no other reason than to let people know the locker is being used.

Yep, another Ymca lock user here.  I know for a fact that stuff has been stolen out of the locker rooms at the Y I use.  I lock.  There have been a couple of times I've lost/forgotten a lock and it made me mighty nervous.

Which Y? And what locker do you usually use?

Actually lots of people know both.  I suppose the fact that I am only usually at the Y from its opening at 5:30am until  about 7:00am and see pretty much the same people all the time (who also use the same lockers daily--some with locks and some without)makes me more comfortable.  That and the fact that all they would be stealing are my clothes for work and toiletries.  If you're that excited by that potential score...

The public pool I used to use occasionally didn't even have lockers. Basically you hung your clothes on hooks out in the open and trusted your fellow man. I never left valuables there, would even bring my keys poolside, but was always worried my clothes would be stolen and I would have to go back to work after lunch pantsless.

Which is why I never lock my truck either.  I figure if someone wants to get into my truck they will just break a window...then I'd have to replace the window and the the CDs that they stole.

I once left my iPod in my bag under my underwear next to my locker while I took a quick shower. When I came back, it was gone (my iPod, not my underwear.) Live and learn.

I used to be a no-lock girl at the Y.  I'm there in the mornings so I figured what kind of mom or grandma would steal my stuff??  Well, one day I had an insulated lunch box with my son's sippy cup and sandwich in my locker, and when I went to get my stuff, the lunch box was gone.  The perp was nice enough to leave the cup and the sandwich though!!!

And a warning for all you who lock stuff in your trunk.  We had a rash of car break-ins at my Y last year.  The bad guys were waiting for people to go inside and would then rob their car, even going to the length of breaking windows and then popping the trunk.  Someone stole my husband's birthday present (an ice cream maker still in the box) out of my trunk.  These people have no qualms about this kind of stuff.

Needless to say, I always take my purse into the Y and lock my locker.

I always lock.  Another woman that I talk to at the pool told me that she had a well-used swimsuit stolen from a locker.  That's practically like stealing underwear in my book.

I will leave my soild underwear in locker number 23 at Cal Fit in Rocklin tonight. They are about a year old, and the wasteband isn't quite what it used to be. Tomorrow, I plan on having some socks, a mostly dry towel, and my favorite old t-shirt. Please leave the t-shirt, you can have the rest.

I see no etiquette issue...come on if you get on me for being intolerant of newbies and not wanting to wait for 20 minutes to get on a machine, you can't care about checking a few lockers to find an empty one.

Chill out...live a little...be risky...run with scissors once and a while.

Always lock my locker. I had some stuff stolen and I never want to deal with the hassles of cancelling those credit cards and getting a new drivers license. Never again !!!!!

I vote for using a lock to keep stuff safe and to indicate the locker is in use.

Lock. Always x2

Even if it's just your car keys.  If your wallet is in the glove box of your car and someone figures out which keys go to which car you are now out both the wallet (with whateve credit/debit cards are in there) and your car.

I think this is definitely an issue of etiquette (as well as security).  I don't like having to open locker after locker to find an empty one, and I definitely don't appreciate it when I open a locker and find myself face to face with someone's underwear or smelly workout clothes.

EXACTLY! One of my biggest pet peeves, is having to open locker after locker because of all the people at my gym who DO NOT use a lock, but stow their belongings in a locker anyway. Makes it much easier to identify which lockers are actually unused...for those of us that DO lock our stuff up.

I never bring a lock to the gym.  I travel all over the country for work and visit many YMCA's and community centers and still I don't use a lock.  It seems like the locker rooms are usually pretty empty.  I never have anything of value with me.  I guess I just don't see the point.

Is it inappropriate?  Should I always be locking my stuff?  What do you do?

I never worried about it until I went into the Y and the police were there taking a report about someone's stolen car.  Ever since then I've locked.
