"It went from hard to damn hard to S#!+ during the last 3 minutes."

haha, that line made me laugh.

marv, how'd it go?

It went well.  I got there at 9:10 and was out by 11.  Nina is great.  She called me today and informed me that I will be getting a call for the second phase within the week.

"After signing a 15 page waiver/explaination, they took my blood pressure and pulse 3x.  Then I did the cycling exhaustion test.  They had a fancy name for it.  Basically, first they test your max lung capacity 3x and then have you basically hyperventilate for 13 seconds.  Hard short breaths like you were reaching the top of a really hard long climb.

Then they put you on a bike and ask you to keep 65 rpm for as long as you can.  I had one of those respitory masks on and about 13 electrodes attached to my chest.  The first 3 minutes were warm up and then essentially you started to climb an impossible hill with the grade increasing about every 30 seconds.  You can't see it, you just focus on keeping 65 rpm.  It went from hard to damn hard to SX$T during the last 3 minutes.  Eventually, she cut it off after 13 minutes.  I couldn't keep it over 60 rpm no matter what.

She said that I set the record for grade and duration for the test.  I thought that was pretty cool!  She gave me some preliminary results and my VO2 max was 62 for the bike.  And she mentioned that the run can be up to 15% higher, so potentially I could have a 71 V02 for the run.  Also, my V02/VCO2 was as high as 1.2 which signifies a maximal effort.

After the test, she tested my Max lung capacity again 3x.  Then I had my nerve response tested in my right hand and right foot.  The put some electrodes on you and then send a current through it.  It felt like I was getting tazed a bit.  Nothing painful, just weird feeling.  Only lasted about 1 minutes.  Finally, they took blood and I was out.

The next phase should be neat I think.  We'll see."

I just got back. My testing took about 2 hours and was pretty much the same as Marvanett's. Order was different, though.

I signed the 15 page consent, then Nino took my blood pressure and blood. Afterwards, I had the nerve response test done. Not too bad. Just felt like a tingling sensation in the wrist and foot.

The RN administering the bike test was cool. She had me do the max lung capacity 3x and then hyperventilate. Afterwards, she attached the electrodes and I got on the bike. Easy at first, then a bi0tch! Instead of 65RPM, she wanted me to maintain RPM closer to 60. That is killer. Low RPM at a hard effort...

It looks like my VO2 max was around low 50 (according to her guesstimate). They'll call me with the results after they process them. She also mentioned that for the run, it could be up to 15% higher.

I was kind of disappointed with my VO2 max "score". I guess that comes with time, though. She said it takes years to get it higher. I have only been training since June or so.

We finished up with the max lung capacity x 3.

Very cool set of tests and professional people administering them. I recommend you guys to give it a tri.

one thing

my VO2 max, according to the tests today, put me right at 50 (+/-1)

i found this calculator and input my last 10k time and it gave me a VO2 Max of 50.6

http://www.runningforfitness.org/calc/vo2.php?metres=10000&hr=0&min=40&sec=56&age=33&gender=M&Submit=Calculate

pretty darn close...

Nothing to really add.  I had my test Monday and went 13 min. at the requested 60 RPM (Senior Citizen Discount )  She stopped me and her only comment was.."Damn, you Tri Guys can push some watts...How old did you say you are? "  Made me feel pretty good since my bike fitness is way down.

Got my blood work results back today and.... woo hoo.  Great numbers across the board.  Bad cholesteral 156...thanks Dad for the great genetics.  Everything within normal limits.  This test would have cost me $250-$300 at my Doctors office.

Nino (sp?) also asked me about another Cardiology study thay are doing after this one.  It pays $250...Problem is you get an arterial IV put in and you have to sit in a chair with no stimulation (radio, TV, reading etc) for 4.5 hours while they read arterial responses.  I think I can be board for that long for a new Adamo bike saddle and several race entry fees

I hope we don't invalidate the results for this study! If nothing but triathletes participate in this study, Emory might have to assume that everyone has a high VO2 MAX and can push high wattage!

I did the second part of the test this morning.  The research guy asked me if I could get some more of my athlete buddies to participate in the research.  He said that could still use a a lot more people.  It is particularly interested in people that exercise on a regular basis.

That's what I was told too, during the first part....problem is that I am still waiting (2 weeks now) for the call to set up the second part.  Nina said they would call the very next week...still waiting.

Nino told me if I hadn't heard anything to call and I had to call the guy like 3 times to set up a time for day 2. She told me when she called with my results that I had passed to go to day 2 and gave me the doctor's number. (if I didn't know for sure I probably wouldn't have called)

They are running behind on the second part.  The guy running the second part is named Ibhar (nice guy).  I called Nino to get his number to schedule it myself.  I called him twice to get an appointment. Both times he said he would call back that afternoon, but did not call me for a couple of weeks.  Ibhar's phone number is (404) 642-3780.  Nino' phone number is (404) 293-8446 and is the number to call to get in the study if you would like.

Maybe one of you guys could explain this to me since they do not explain the VO2 test.  My VO2 test said that my MHR at V02 max was 153.  I averaged 159 last week on a two mile run.  I also have seen 184 on a strenuous bike ride in the last year.  I was hoping the test would help me set up my HR zones, but I can't use 153 for a max since I can average higher than that for six miles if I want.

brian - 2009-02-25 5:52 PM Remind me of what all is involved in the process ... and, more importantly, your thoughts about what you have gone through.

Brian - I would highly recommend the study.  My only two complaints would be 1) as you can see on the previous few post, they were a bit slow to schedule the second part of the study. and 2) they did not tell me that I would be doing the VO2 test on the first day.  She told me that I would only be doing questions and blood work until I got there that morning.  I did a hard (for me ) six mile run the night before my test and I had to do my VO2 max test in blue jeans and street shoes.

Here is the recap you wanted.  First visit is at Emory on Clifton Rd, you read about the study and initial all the pages, then they took my blood pressure three times with at least 2 minute intervals between, then they took blood and eventually sent me an analysis of my cholesterol, triglycerides and a lot of other stuff, then they to me to a lab and gave me a mild shock to my wrist and then ankle to test muscle reflex, then they to me to another lab for the VO2 max test.   Before the VO2 test, they had me blow fast and hard into a measuring device. They really did not explain the VO2 test or the results.  After the first vist which should take about 3 hours (mine was longer), they send you a $25 check.

On the second visit which is at Emory Crawford Long Hospital, you answer a lot of questions about diet and exercise, then they do and ultrasound test on your arteries in your neck, arm, and upper leg.  They test your BP.  They check your arm again while putting the BP monitor on your forearm.  This was the only uncomfortable part of the whole thing, but it was not too bad.  They weighed me for a fat/body composition analysis.  They asked if I would like a bone density scan which was not part of the study.  I did it and not only did I get a bone density scan, I got a more accurate fat/body composition scan.  It is done on the DXA machine that Dan spoke of in the GT study.  This visit lasted three hours and you get a $100 check in the mail after you complete this part of the study.

All in all, I thought it was well worth my time.  My cousin who works at Emory told me that all the test I got were worth around 3 thousand dollars.   The main things that I wanted out of the test were the blood work analysis and the VO2 max test.

Brian I am doing this study as well.  They have now split it into 3 visits.

Visit 1: read and sign 15 pages of forms, BP taken 3x 5 minutes apart, blood drawn and nerve conductivity test on wrist and foot...you get $25 for this visit and Nino was offering lots of information for other studies that I could participate in.  Seems there is a scarcity of healthy poeple in their 40's that have never been diagnosed with a chronic condition or on prescribed medication.

Visit 2: Done at Met-test labs located near Perimeter mall.  They did the cardiac stress test/lung capacity/VO2max testing there

Visit 3: Still working to schedule this one, but it will be at Emory and will be the DEXA test and arterial scans

I feel like it has definitely been worth my time.

Juanice

Neal,

Did you get your blood results in the mail or something?

In regards to your question, this test isn't really good for testing zones because it was not a long sustained effort.  HR always lags effort.  Basically, the test is too short and it's not at a sustained effort.

Dan- thanks for the comment on testing zones.  I assumed as much since it is so off for me.  I did get my blood results in the mail within a week of my blood test because I told her that I would like them mailed.  They also can give them to you when you get the second part of the test done.  Ibhar was going to give me another copy, but I told him I already had one.

Just left a message for Nino: I am out ... time is a scarce commodity for me right now.  I thought that the VO2max test would provide some metabolic results by which I could cross reference field test for HR zones.  Apparently that is not the case.

Add further review of the time it takes to complete the test, travel back + forth and I am afraid that it would be too much of a scheduling nightmare as this is my busy season.

Good luck to all that are doing it.
