jrm,

Hit the 'Mode' button

Select 'Settings'

Select 'General'

Select 'Data Fields'

Select which screen you want to modify: Main 1, Main 2, Running, or Biking

A window will appear that says "Use the up and down keys to change data fields"

Press 'Enter' and a new, small window will appear that allows you to select how many data fields appear on that screen.

The fewer data fields, the bigger the numbers will get.  After the screen has the correct sizes you want, change the data fields to show the information you want to see.  For example, my main running screen has three data fields.  My heart rate is the biggest field, my pace is on lower left and distance run is in the lower right.  Handy for me.  Play with it until you get it the way you want.

xcrunner,

Your 305 isn't actually giving you your distance run.  What is happening is the unit is receiving poor quality signals inside your house or gym and using them several times a second to recalculate your position.  Since the signal quality is poor, it comes up with a slightly different position each time it recalculates even though you haven't moved and it tallies the new position as movement.

So, what you are getting is useless data.  You would do better to turn the GPS receiver off while on the trainer or treadmill.  Just don't forget to change the graph in the Training Center to 'Time' for the 'X' axis.  If you leave it set for 'Distance', the graph of your heart rate will not show up.

You can turn the GPS receiver off by:

Press 'Mode'

Select 'Settings'

Select 'General'

Select 'System'

You will see a window that is highlighted just below 'GPS'.  Hit the 'Enter' key and it will give you an option to turn the GPS receiver off.

That way, your battery will last about three times as long.

Shoeless - 2009-01-13 8:17 AM There have been several threads here lately about different issues with the Garmin 305. I'd like to hear from people who's gadgets are working just fine. DD wants to purchase one for her 4-H project. TIA

Elevation based entirely on GPS is worthless.  But if you upload your data to motionbased.com and use their elevation tool, it will recalculate the elevation based on topo data, which will give you much more accurate numbers.

My 301 has worked fine for the last year.  My HRM has been having problems but I got a new battery for it so we shall see.  I haven't checked for Firmware upgrades for it but will now.

Have had mine for 15 months. It has shut down a number of times and I have had to reboot it.

It also has a problem downtown with the tall buildings.

However, by and large I am very happy with it. Managed to last 13.5 hours in my IM which I was happy with.
