This might be more of a COJ thread but it is triathlete related.

I've found that several of my triathlon friends either currently ride or used to ride motorcyles.  I also used to ride a motorcycle years ago.  Just wondering if there is something about motorcycles that draws triathletes?  Perhaps the need for speed?

Maybe a need for speed.  I have one and love it.  I bought one when gas was outrageous, but still ride often.  That said, the last thing I want to do after a long ride is get on the motorcycle.

I miss not having a motorcycle.  I had one stolen from my front drive and have yet to replace it.  I miss it every day :-(

The common thread IMHO isn't speed as much as "active" people that like to be outdoors.  I'll bet that vs. the general population triathletes also enjoy skiing and snowmobiling at higher percentages.

And, of course, pizza. (not sure if outdoors applies here).

Got one and love it. Briefly considered selling it and buying a TriBike but then changed my mind. Glad I did.

I think we all like single-track sports and yes, pizza.

I have my license and took the Motorcycle Safety Course, but I actually own a scooter.  Now, I've never gone over 45 miles per hour... but I can say that the appeal for me is:

1. being right out there in nature
2. speed
3. doing something different that makes people's jaws drop (especially since I don't look particularly daring)

These are all things I get with triathlon too.  I agree with the other post that this also, for me, goes along with my other interests (scuba, etc).

Scooter for me, but it hits 55mph easily. Easy to park in the city and don't have to worry about someone stealing my bike. Weather here stays temperate enough to ride the scooter unless it rains.

I love not being caged up in a car...and my work is only 4 hilly miles away from home. It gets 110 miles per tank and takes 1.8 gallons to fill up...needless to say, gas prices don't affect me much! Until it's tri season and I have to drive the truck to events.

I've owned a sportbike for a while.  A blue R6 actually.  I like the fact that it's a very physical bike to ride.  It's a workout in itself.

I also like the intensity and amount of concentration required.  When I'm on the bike theres no room to worry about work,  family, the economy etc...  It's a great way to let it all go.

I guess that makes it alot like doing a triathlon...

FWIW, a LOT of professional motorcycle racers ride bikes and/or participate in triathlon.

I rode motorcycles for years before getting into triathlon.  A variety of reasons kept me off my bike (moto) for a little while, but I'm back on again and loving it.

Got rid of my bike and got an ATV. (We have no need for snowmobiles down here) Would still love to have a dual sport motorcycle, but then I wouldn't have time to train.

Count me in as a scooter-owner.  I've had Olive for 1 1/2 years now, and ride her year-round as long as the streets are clear of snow and ice - which means this winter, not so much.

My other hobby/addiction is riding my 2002 Harley-Davidson Heritage Softail Classic. I've put on 50k miles, riding all over the country. IMO...there is NO better way to travel and see this awesome country, than on a motorcycle!!!

My first bike, and the one I learned to ride on, was a '72 Kawasaki 750 two-stroke triple. Think of it as three 250cc dirt bike engines bolted together in one frame. Later I bought a new '85 Yamaha FJ1100, pretty much the hottest stock sport bike you could buy at the time. I haven't ridden in quite a few years now, though I still look and get an itch for one now and then.

Edit: Spent a lot of years with a seasons pass to a nearby (at the time) ski hill too. That may have helped the quads for biking a bit.

I've been riding dirt bikes since I was 4 yrs old, Dad wouldn't let me race though.  I started racing motocross in 2000, got married, have a son and one on the way so I am currently just doing local moto-x races, hare scrambles, going to get back into racing when the boys get old enough to race too.  (if they want too.)  Riding is part of life.  Can't see myself with out one.
