On the days I run track repeats, I can meet or exceed the times in my run program. However, at some point my heart rate winds up exceeding 90% max.  Is this  a problem even though I feel fine after the run?

Depends on what you mean by max HR and how you determined it.

Agreeing with Aikido...

Did you determine it from LT (lactate threshold) testing, or by some other method? (Meaning: Maybe your determined max isn't your max).  Or you may have improved since the last time you had it determined and need to retest...

Agree with the above -- tell us where your 'max' came from.

Can you also tell us why think think it might be a problem?  Do you have some reason for not wanting these workouts to get over 90MHR?  I believe that a lot of people who train by HR (I don't) would say that 90% MHR and even higher is just what you are after when doing intervals.

I would say don't worry about what you think your Max HR is...

Max HR is not trainable
Max HR declines in a predictable fashion as we age
Max HR "calculations" have no place in determining HR trainign zones.

MOre information can be read here, in fact, this article could have been written about you:

Thanks for the replies.  Used the 220 minus age, which I know is not the best method.  The reason I asked about this is because the program I read said not to exceed 90% of max heart rate.  Physically, I have no problems with the pace or the rate.

220 - age could be one of the worst ways...  But some may argue.  You just proved the point.  No one can run at you max HR for any length of time and "feel fine".

I would suggest some of the other reading (given above) and using the LT method.  Or skip all that and go with what feels right (RPE method).

Here is all the discussion you'd ever need on 220-age:

Lol...can't imagine anyone would argue with this who knows about the origin of the formula!
