Subject: Beginner Tri-athlete needs afforable beginner bike(s)

My wife and I are going to start competing in tri's and we are looking at bikes. But we are in sticker shock. My questions are (1) What are some good beginner bikes? (2) How can I get them for a good* price?

*Good means around 500 dollars or less, if it has to be used then so be it.

Thanks!!

Craigslist, ebay, your local bike shop (if they do trade-ins and carry used) local triathlon/bike clubs, Beginnertriathlete.com classified forum will all be good starts*

I have no experience with bikesdirect.com but there are some lower-priced, entry level bikes to be found.

*if you are willing to risk a criminal record and potentially a prison sentence, there are other means...

For $500 you can get a nice (used) specialized allez, trek 1.2, giant, or something similar in a road bike on ebay or craigslist. Also!!!! never forget that starting your first tri on a cheap moutain bike thats been sitting in your garage for the past 5 years isn't a terrible idea. Its nice to get a feel for them and see what other people are riding and make decisions from there.

I did my first Sprint on a MTB and although my time wasn't great, you should've seen the looks on people's faces when I passed them and their fancy TT/Tri bikes. Priceless.
