Former RD Rusty Bex asked that I pass on this info:

Quick announcement to let all of you know that registration for the 2009
Opelousas Rotary Sunrise Duathlon is NOW OPEN!!  The date for the event is
Sunday, March 22.

The race is again the site for the LA Duathlon State Championship.  The 2 mile
run, 16 mile bike, 2 mile run course has not changed at all.

But two things about the race have changed:

1.  The bike course is now smooth and fast.  The road conditions have improved
dramatically and it is a great course to ride.
2.  I am no longer your race director.  Keith Hebert is now the race director
and he brings a wealth of experience in race directing to the table.  This
experience will only improve upon the success of the race.  And I will be
assisting Keith during this transition.

I haven't done this one since 2006 I think.  Is the bike route still on the service roads next to I-49?  I didn't think the route was rough before. . . . but like I mentioned, it's been a while.  Maybe I just don't remember.

They've changed it slightly the past two years to avoid the stretch on the north side of the loop which was horrible. In effect they made it an out-and-back rather than a two-loop course, using the service road on only one side of I-49. At least that's what it was in '07 and '08.

The other rough spot was between the hospital and I-49 which had deteriorated to a series of potholes connnected by thin ribbons of asphalt. I think that's what they're referring to as fixed.

Are you considering it this year?

I need to get my butt back running.  I've been sort of thinking of switching some focus this year to road cycling.  But I am really considering the Rotary Duathlon since it's a little later in March than the T-Gator.  And it's closer to BR!  So, to answer your question . . . . probably, haha.

Especially if the pavement is nice and smooth!

If I get a chance, I'll go ride it this weekend and give you a first-hand report.

Rode the bike course today, it is the road from the hospital to I-49 that is newly paved, a lot better than it was last year. The rest of the course was unchanged, still in decent shape. Hills still hurt.

Plenty of wnid today, which sucked (or blew, depending on your point of view).

Here's the route as I drew it two years ago.
