Ok who is in for this one and how cold will the water be or do we not want to think about that?

I will be either renting, buying or borrowing a wetsuit.  Other than that, I don't know.

I will be taking my wetsuit along just in case. I was told the water will be around 50 to 60 degrees in.

You guys know it's going to be cold right?  Even with the green glowing water you will probably want to wear a wetsuit...

Yeah, peeps, for this race, it is an absolute no-brainer.  Wear your wetsuit.

I may do the sprint and the swim description on the Setup site says water will be in the 60's so "pack your suit".  I will plan on either buying one or renting one for this one... if I do it.

Yes it has been a cold winter and I am worried about the water temps. We are what 8 weeks out? I am babying my hammie and keeping options open - ie will do the sprint the next day if I am not really up to a 6 mi run. Wetsuit for sure! This is a nice venue for our part of Virginia - relatively flat road.

Recently had a bit of a hamstring issue myself of the Grade 1-2 variety.  First day I was barely getting around, but after some good icing, stretching after 24 hours, I was running and spinning a few short days later.  Good luck on getting it back into shape.

I've read this is a relatively flat course which makes it interesting for me as a first tri event.  I just need to figure out the I don't have a bike issue.

I'm in for the International on Saturday.  I'm excited to use this race to test fitness levels, practice transitions, and get ready for my A races in Columbia and then at Eagleman.

By the way, it's a no-brainer that we'll be wearing wetsuits that weekend.  A coworker of mine has a house at Lake Anna and she went out on her boat this past weekend and dropped a thermometer in the water.  It was in the 50's!!!  I know it's a couple of weeks away yet and plus I'm not sure exactly what side of the lake she placed the thermometer, but I know one thing's for sure....it's going to be COLD!

Good luck to all!

I'm doing the Sprint, and I am very concerned about both the water temp and the outside air temp. If things do not warm up soon, it's going to be a very miserable day. I know in 2007, the water was 57 that weekend (when the Kinetic races were that weekend) - they cut the distance of the Kinetic Half swim, because it was too cold to stay in that long. I heard that even with neoprene caps, it was miserable (from friends who did the sprint). If the water is in the 50s and the air temp isn't much higher, it's going to SUCK. And I'd assume that if the water is cold enough, they will cancel the swim portion. As long as it still  keeps going down to the 30s at night, it's not going to help.

Water in the 50's is not comfortable, I know that is a DUH statement but when I've done it my hands were so numb they were non-functional for quite a while after I got out.

Much as I like the venue and the nice flat course both my training buddy and I are out for this race due to running injuries so I am (don't know about her) aiming for Kinetic sprint in May.

I know, I kind of wish I'd just waited and signed up for the Kinetic sprint instead. But yeah, it's pretty flat and that is encouraging...

Don't be scared. I did the Giant Acorn in the fall and this is the same race. It is very beginner friendly, you will love it.

It's not a scary race. The water will be cold, though. Otherwise, the course is very easy, as others have said.

I'm looking at doing the Giant Acorn (0lympic) in the fall (Oct. 3). I wanted to do the Patriot Weekend Int'l in Williamsburg, but it's a Sunday race and I'm a pastor, so I need to do as many on Saturday as I can.

What can you tell me about Bumpass in the fall? Air temps? Water temps?

Ah, I love Bumpass in the fall.  The sounds, the sights, the foliage, it's simply lovely.

Seriously... the water temp is fine, I did Giant Acorn that same weekend in 2007 and the water was in the mid 70s, and the air temps are also fine, probably was around 70.  No issues whatsoever.
