It occurred to me the other day that gels etc haven't really been around that long. In the early days of IM (or other endurance events) what did people do for energy / nutrition?

There's only so many bananas I could handle in one day. Did they take in less calories back then? And if so how did they get thorugh events? Tougher? Slower? More damage to selves?

Just wonderin...

Funny--the first time I talked with Wendy Ingraham, I asked her the same thing ... she laughed and said, "Well, I'd have like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich at the turnaround ... [maybe she was talking about a bike turnaround? not sure] and another one before the run."

If you read the interviews with some of the guys who did the very first Ironman, they ate whatever their support crew gave them or what they could pick up at a mart or fast-food ... oranges, bananas, Coke, chocolate, sandwiches ... two guys stopped at a McDonald's and one of them had a whole meal ...

Moving on to the 1980s, this is a pretty funny article by Dave Scott, with some good contemporary tips.
