Expert 819 Phoenix, AZ | Subject: RE: 30 Day Nutrition Challenge Okay, so i didn't get all of my food logged from last night, BUT I have a really, really good excuse! My stupid cat spilt water on my NEW lap top and I'm pretty sure it's a gonner it won't even turn on. SO, no internet access=no logging. Yeah I know it sounds like the old "my dog ate my homework" but it's true. P.S. would anyone like to adopt a cat?? |

Here is what I just ate for breakfast. Help me out here. 2 large eggs, a smidge of skim milk, a pinch of cheddar cheese, 1/2 a small avocado, half a small cantelope, a mug of green tea How do I figure that out? Two ways. You can look each of them up on a calorie counting site and then enter them as a custom food, or search in the public foods. I've been putting in everything as a custom food, that way it appears in a personal little drop down box in the nutrition log. Eggs would be in Dairy/Eggs. same with the skim milk (How much is a smidge? 3 oz, a gallon?), the cheddar cheese (Again, how much is a pinch?). Avocado is in the fruits section, as is the canteloupe. The green tea is probably calorie neutral, but you should log any sugar/milk you put in it. John |

Veteran 277 | Subject: RE: 30 Day Nutrition Challenge Way to go John and Jen for losing weight. Writting down what you eat is a proven factor to losing weight. Yeah me too. I went to my weigh in meeting last night and was down 2.2 lbs. I would love to get to 139.8 lbs by my doctor appointment on 3/20. Hey it's in the 130's I don't care if it's only by .2 lbs it counts! Maybe I can get down to my pre baby weight of 133 lbs (which was too much then) by the time she graduates from high school this May. Hey it's only 18 years To lose the 7.2 lbs by the doctor appointment I would need to cut back 25,200 calories. Daily average of 1800 for the next 14 days. 1397 BMR + 1970 (i.e. bike at average 12MPH for 3.5 hours) - 1800 calories (25,200/14)=1570 calories each day. The question is do I have 3.5 hours each day to work out and if I was working out that much would I be starving on 1570 calories. This is an interesting thought I might just try to play with this. Any thoughts from the peanut gallery? |

Any thoughts from the peanut gallery? Uhm...yeah, don't do it. A large majority of what you lose will be water weight in that short of a time frame, and will come back anyway. Also, that much working out on that severe of a calorie restriction will actually somewhat be counterproductive, since your body will get thrown into kind of a "ZOMG WHAT IS SHE DOING SAVE EVERY CALORIE!!" kind of mode, and the weight loss will slow to a crawl anyway. 1, MAYBE 2lbs a week is about the maximum long term, sustainable fat loss. Anything more than that, and when you up your calories a bit some of it will get replenished. Aim for 3-5 lbs by the doc visit, that would put you right in the middle of the 130's. Set a goal to be below 130 by the end of April (About 1.5 lbs per week, or 5200 calories a week. That's ~ 740 calories a day below your "maintenance" level), that puts you at a good weight going into the race season. My goal is to be racing at ~ 167ish lbs. I started at 184 in early Feb, I'm down to 176.6 on the scale this morning. w00t!! (My drive kick started when I put on my jammers to coach and noticed a bit of "dunlap" disease... ) John Thanks for the input John. I'm still trying to figure out how my exercise plays into my weight loss. I certainly didn't starve myself last week (look at my logs) and still managed to lose 2.2 lbs so I'm good with that. BTW, your math is a bit off. I'm at currently 147 so to get to mid 130's by the doctor visit in 2 weeks I have to lose 12 lbs in 2 weeks (even I know that won't happen). Now to get under 130 by the end of April (8 weeks away) I need to lose 2.3 lbs a week. This is doable but not sure if I can consistently do that each week. I'm focusing (most of the time) on eating healty foods and not being a pig. Congrats again on your weight loss and thanks again for pulling me back to reality |

Master 2411 Goodyear, AZ | Subject: RE: 30 Day Nutrition Challenge I have a question, seeing as you guys seem way more knowledgeable about nutrition than me! In logging my nutrition, I notice that I eat a lot of bars, like Powerbar, Odwalla, Cliff etc. (sometimes 2 or 3 2 per day) As the weather heats up I seem to drink more sports drinks (Gatorade, Heed) and I also eat gels during and before some workouts. So, my question is how much is too much of those? I guess I always considered them "healthy" snacks but I am using them a lot outside of training. I work in a classroom all day and have very little time to sit down and eat so they are a convenient way of getting calories/nutrition quickly. Anyone have ideas for snacks that still provide good nutrition but are not so "pre-packaged"??? BTW, this nutrition logging has been good, I have never really paid attention to what I eat or where my nutrition is coming from. I think I eat too much fat (and definitely too much peanut butter!) TIA |

TIA I am not sure what the ratio is supposed to be (and I suspect that like all things it differs per person/body type), but I bet SportyJ or Robot would have better insights or links to look at. However, as you have been logging longer than I I see you only average about 25-26% fat. You have the body of a goddess so I image you must be dialed in pretty good. All athletes need some fat, so do not go to overboard looking at that one piece. The powerbars and gels are easy, but as you pointed out - pre-packaged. Apples are also prepackaged, along with most fruits (as in they come that way naturally. Perhaps just add them or split the difference. Then again, I am the perfect "do what I say, not what i do" coach! |

Veteran 277 | Subject: RE: 30 Day Nutrition Challenge Since the food police haven't run their check yet I could be dishonest and post what I ate quickly before I'm caught but I'll fess up. I went on a ride (see bike challenge thread for more info) and then went to TriFest where I ate snack foods and then got home around 7:00 p.m. and topped of my already crappy day of eating by going out to Arbys for a Beef and Cheddar. OMG I felt so crappy yesterday and last night. My body did not like not having fruits and veggies and crap for the most part. I also think I may not have drank enough water. I will figure out how to put up a loser avatar later today unless you grant me grace for being honest . |
