Just wanted to let all the west-siders know of another Mugging on the I-90 trail around the Mt. Baker Tunnel/parks. It happened last week. Two men in all black clothes wearing hockey masks attacked a cyclist simply trying to go home during daylight hours. If you ride in the area or on that trail please always be aware of your surroundings and if it looks iffy don't go through the area (or wait until there are many people going at once.)

Keep it safe!

Thanks for letting us know Justin. That is just scary!!!  I usually carry mace but if that would even work. I guess now I won't be doing the 1/2 loop by myself this weekend anymore.

This is around the 5th one in the last year. They go after commuters from what the other stories have indicated (people with packs/panniers which carry wallets, laptops, pda's etc...) A ride around in the middle of Saturday would probably be safer than doing so on a thursday Afternoon but still Scary, Just have to be extra warry of the parks, if you come up from Lake Wa Blvd and just hop right onto the trail going to Mercer you would avoid the bad west end and the Mt. Baker Tunnel.

I heard that Cascade Bicycle Club had set up a tent with safety info on that route today--maybe the increased awareness will help reduce that stuff from happening.  It is pretty scary though.  I have to admit, I don't know the Mt. Baker tunnel route--I must always go a different way somehow.  Hmm.

It's a good reminder to always be aware of your surroundings, no matter what you are doing!  It's also why I prefer to run with my dog and ride with my friends.  I also have a Road ID that I wear, in case something happens and I am unable to communicate.  (god forbid)

It's good that Cascade is out there, but I don't think this is really a biking issue. It's just muggings. If people were walking through that tunnel they would be just as vulnerable to ambush as a cyclist. The tunnel serves as a bottleneck, so no matter how aware you are of your surroundings your escape routes are limited. Even if you turn and run the other way, it's a long tunnel and you'll probably be caught before you get out of it.

I kind of don't like the idea of Cascade adopting this issue, because if it becomes a bike issue then it would marginalize it and the city might not care so much. Anyone who reads the sound-offs for bike articles in the PI should know what I'm talking about. I would rather see it approached as a general safety thing, so that the city will see incentive to do something about it.

I would agree that it is more of a safety issue than biking. I just mentioned it as biking because a lot of people seem to use that route for training rides and rec cycling/commuting so I thought it was more pertinent. There are a lot of people who walk that area as well but it seems like the incidents I hear about are bike related.

Also the Sound Off is NOT a good way to view public opinion for anything more than a small scale. but that is just my opinion.

There are cameras in the tunnel but they are not actively monitered, just there for the cops to look at after the fact. Also cameras can easily be fooled by a simple maskand hoodie. Most of the muggings actually happen in the parks on either side of the tunnel from what I have read.
