Subject: What to do about a blood blister?

Hi there,

After a rather good 10 mile run, I went to take my shoes off to find a blood blister about the size of an oval dime on the side of my foot near my big toe.  I have had blisters before but do you treat blood blisters the same way.  Any advice about getting rid of it?  I have ran distance in these shoes before.  I hope this is not a reoccuring trend.

MAN up, or woMAN up, put a bandaid on it, and go out for another run =)

leave it alone.  if it hurts either get moleskin and cut out a hole the size of the blister and build up around it to protect or a product called bursa ?tek? - they have it at REI - kind of a fake blister that protects the real one whilst it heals

I would poke it with a needle to get the blood and puss out of it, then put a bandaid over it.  If you don't pop it, it can dry and/or take quite a long time to go away.  If you do pop it, make sure you make a tiny hole, don't tear it, and then keep it covered so that your socks/shoes dont tear it.

Me...

Drain it with a sterile needle. Lube it up with neosporin. Cover it with a bandaid. Go run some more..

If you pop it, you effectively turn a closed wound into an open wound.  Worse yet, you will create an open puncture wound, which is highly susceptible to secondary infection and virtually impossible to clean.

My advice is to leave it alone,  put moleskin around it with a hole cut in the middle or wear some extra socks while you are training.  Eventually, the dead skin will peel away and you will be nearly 100% healed.  Even then, avoid peeling away the skin by pulling on it or trimming it.  You run the risk if removing skin that is alive which will create an open wound.  Just let the skin fall off on it's own.

Your body will take care of it's self, just give it a chance.

Lastly, take a second look at your shoe style and fit.

Good luck

Probably good advice for almost everyone. After all, if anyone would know it would be you!

I have a funky right toe that rubs on my big toe. If I forget to wrap it with a bandaid, it blisters almost immediately. Then it hurts too bad to run more unless I drain it. Not ideal but it's what works for me. Never had it infect but it's certainly a risk.

You've got a doc and a former medic telling you not to do it ...... would be sound thinking to follow their advice.

On the other hand, I just pop/drain it and go about my normal routine.
