Pre-race routine:

Well we set our alarms for 4am and I set my watch ahead. Janice also set her phone ahead not knowing that it would automatically set itself ahead so we woke up at 3. After some middle of the night confusion we went back to sleep for an hour. Got up got dressed and caught the bus to the venue.

Janice: "So we are going to get up at 4m to get the bus"
Me: "yes"
Janice:"So then we are going to sit around at the venue for a couple hours til we give up our bags"
Me: "yes"
Janice:" and then we are going to walk 1/2 mile"
Me: "yes"
Janice: "and then we are going to stand around for an hour til the race starts?"
Me: "Yep"
Janice:"sounds fabulous"

We got some GIANT rice krispie treats for breakfast the night before which we brought with us with some diet coke (of course) and made ourselves a little picnic. I think the RKTs were even better than poptarts for pre-race food. We chatted and stretched and people watched. I would say at least 10% of the field was in full costume. Janice wanted to Princess up so we got some cool accessories for our hats and had princess temporary tattoos. There was a HUGE line to drop off our stuff. Walked to the start with a porta potty stop. Found Irene in the corral and hung out with her.

I took 2 lava salts before the race start to try and pre-load some electrolytes.
Event warmup:

Stretching and a walk to the start.

Comments:

I started out nice and easy just doing my own thing. I was hoping to PR but was not overly concerned about it and just wanted to do my best. My achilles tendons have been really sore lately and I REALLY do not need an injury. Also my left knee has been sore since I fell on it Christmas eve.

I actually PASSED PEOPLE. A little congested to start which you would expect. I was about 10:30ish the first mile. I didn't do mile splits because I would loose my total time. HR was in the low 150s. Was a little faster the 2nd mile 10:15ish and the third maybe 10ish 4th about the same. I refilled my water bottle at the second aide station between miles 3 and 4. I think one of my big mistakes last weekend was 1-not drinking enough and 2-getting really low electrolyte wise.

Coming into the park they had these AMAZING dummers....I guess they are from annabananamc's school. They were the best group in the park. Running through the magic Kingdom was quite fun and entertaining. I took a little walk break but no more than 30 seconds. I stopped to use the porta potty after exiting the park. At mile 6 I took two more lava salts. I did pretty well thru mile 6-7 then my legs just hurt. My HRwent from the low 150s to the low 140s. When I was doing my long runs getting ready for IMFL last fall they were not like this. I dont' know why I'm not tolerating runs over 6-8 miles anymore. Its very frustrating. Went to a 9:1 run walk. Then a 4:30-:30 run walk. I refilled my bottle about 3 or 4 more times. Took some cliff blocks at the food station and they actually worked really well and I don't do well eating food while running so this is good for future referance.

I stopped and slathered myself with biofreeze I think right before the cliff shot stop and again with about 2 miles to go. My left leg was about green with the stuff from the knee down. I think it did help tho. The walk breaks helped too. Coming into epcot they had this LAME jazz band...they should have the drummers there!!!

A little run thru Epcot. I considered waiting there for Janice but I was not sure how far behind me she was and I knew I would get freezing cold if I was stopped for very long so I went on. Legs felt a tad better the last 2 miles. Maybe the biofreeze I don't know. Ran thru the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe not walk around the water park the day before but we had so much fun I can't say I regret it. Not eat so much junk in the days leading up to the race. Not sure the 5K the day before was a good idea. I think the 15 the week before was definately NOT a good idea.
Post race
Warm down:

Got some ice and waited for Janice to finish. They had DIET COKE at the finish which was HEAVEN.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

crappy genetics
walking around a water park all day before
achilles tendinitis
sore legs
not fully recovered from the week before

Event comments:

This was a very fun race and an awesome fun weekend. Everything was very well done....well except the post race food because that did kind of suck but everything else was really good. When you signed up you picked your favorite princess and your bib was colored accordingly. I was Belle and my bib was yellow. It said Princess Susan on it. Very sweet. Janice and I had an awesome awesome weekend all around. Big congrats to Janice on her first 1/2 marathon. She is already talking about next year!!!

Happy Birthday!!! Excuse me but I have the crappy genetics, or rather just the crappy part anyway. Speaking of which I did not see any crap stops so that's a good thing!

Nice job on the race, I hope you're feeling well and your achilles tolerated the run okay. It sounds like a fun venue, glad you had a good time!

Congratulations on a good run...even if it wasn't the PR you'd hoped for. You looked FABULOUS in your sparkly m-dot and hair sparklies!!

Its AWESOME when Coke sponsors a race and Disney has to actually have something other than warm powerade at the finish!! Did you get the pixie dust at the end?

Congratulations Sue!

What a fun way to celebrate your birthday

Diet Coke at the finish...sweet! Frustrating that your legs don't seem to want to cooperate and make things easier.

What a special weekend~

CONGRATULATIONS on such a great set of races for your birthday weekend. Funny, I loooove Krispie Treats too.

Loved the detail about the drummers, and so glad they had diet Coke for you at the end!

Belle was always my favorite Disney princess because she's super-smart, a brunette and not dressed like a wh0re

Great job, even with the crappy genetics
