if done correctly, lots of muscle pain, burning leg sensation and maybe even a bit of throwing up

I enjoy time trials very much, they are fast and certainly painful but fun.

Warm up warm up warm up warm up. Best way to do it is on a trainer...then pull bike off and ride to start. Do not miss yoru start time. Then, it's balls-to-the-wall.

Yes, yes, yes... you definitely need to get good and warm.

Then embrace the pain because you've only got a short time to enjoy it.

Ask how they do start time and how they run it as they can vary how they handle things.

One I do the most, the go by time so they line up from slowest to fastest and we go off every 30 seconds. If you are new they ask how fast they think you will be and put you in time wise.

To warm up I like about 30 minutes with some hard5'  intervals to get lactic acid in my legs and get the buffering going.

When our tri club does TT's, the distance varies from 4 miles (straight up) to 25 miles (rolling).  My favorite course is 19 miles with rollers and one big hill.  Warm-up is essential!!!  I somehow never warm up enough and end up paying the price.  We do 30 second starts with girls in the front.  Usually women's road bikes, women's aero, men's road, men's aero.  The stupidfast guys start last and I start first.  They are done and packed up before I get back.  At least I get to wave at everyone as they zip past me.   The club runs 2 series of four TT's (spring and fall).  Great race prep.

WATCH--YOUR--PACING! Most first-timers redline during the first mile and crash and burn before the finish line. This doesn't mean start easy. Ramp up to your threshold effort during the first mile and do your best to stay at or slightly below. During the last mile or so, give 'er everything. Puking optional. If you still have legs at the finish, probably didn't go hard enough. I usually run before a tt (short distance but w/ intense intervals) and then do some higher cadence spinning prior to my start to get the heart rate up and stabilized. TT's are a blast, but they don't call 'em the Torture Chamber for nothing!

Unless it's a 40k...then you've got a while to revel in the awesomeness.

TT are my favorite race.  A word of advice that I have not seen yet.  Spin - do not mash.  High cadence spin is the way to go.

Unless your pedaling style happens to be lower cadence .......

Not necessarily. For a TT, I'll generally go one gear bigger, since I'm not worried about saving my legs. I go faster pushing a bigger gear for a short distance than I do spinning faster.

mmmmmmmmmmm TTs:-)

start hard, but not overkill, if this is anything over about 8 miles if it hurts in the first two min you probably started too hard. i take the first two min to slowly get into pace, then do whatever it takes to keep the speed up, some courses this requires a lower cadence/bigger gear, sometimes spinning, sometimes both.

there is no run after so you should be hurting part way through and dying near the end.

is this is shorter than a 40k, something like 8-18 miles, then its gonna suck mosto f the way.

Placement is everything.  If you can get a minute behind someone you know is just a little faster it will spur you on to catch them.  If you get passed, it can be a little disheartening.
