North Carolina Azalea Festival
44F / 7C
Overcast
Total Time = 54m 25s
Overall Rank = 30/326
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 2/16
Pre-race routine:

Ate up a banana, some OJ, and oatmeal. Drove from Hamptead to UNCW, had to pay 10 bucks for USAT fee since my renewal card hadn't arrived yet (I renewed in November)!
Event warmup:

Took the phoenix out for a spin with my new disc! Hit up the diving pool for a good 10 minute w/u swim.
Swim
  • 05m 44s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Bad swim. Got passed by 2 people, almost knocked my goggles off going under the lane marker. Just didn't feel strong at all. Should have swam 5:25. Came out in 5:44, crossed the marker at 6:01.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Avg 22mph for 9+ miles. Not bad considering 10+ speedbumps and frigid weather...numb hands and feet. Had a tough time putting on armwarmers otherwise I would have frozen. I had 25:45 on my computer.
What would you do differently?:

Wear ski gloves and wool socks! Rinse the soap out of my aero drink after washing it....soapy water tastes horrible!
Bike
  • 25m 45s
  • 9.5 miles
  • 22.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Decent bike, need to check the cassette on the disc...there are some big gears on that thing! Wanted to keep cadence 92-94avg but the cassette was new and I couldn't find the just right gear.
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

My feet were numb 1/2 way up my calf and my hands were frozen. Imagine changing shoes with no feeling in hands and attempting to put socks on..HA! I wasted 30 seconds, easy.
What would you do differently?:

Pick a warmer day!
Run
  • 19m 7s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

Pretty decent run considering my hands and feet were numb half way through. The cold air was perfect for running. Once I hit 1 1/4 miles, I felt great...I hammered the last 1/2 mile. IT band started tightening up towards the end.
What would you do differently?:

Bring my race belt...run 18:20.
Post race
Warm down:

More like warm up. After packing up the gear and changing into 3 layers I was still shivering. After picking up my age group award and talking to a few folks...I hit up the natatorium to get warm and stretch for 25 minutes.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Soapy aerodrink water, poor swim, and frozen limbs(slow transition).
