The whole weekend and no mishaps.  Hip is healing well, shoulder hurts but should be better soon.  Thanks for the good thoughts

11 days and counting!  I'm feeling pretty zapped of any energy right now.... can't seem to wake up today (i'm blaming taper).
I may swim friday at somepoint just to get  a feel for the water temp--depends on how long the bike check in takes, and how long we are at the expo that day...perhaps sometime in the early morning before 10am...
Anyone think they may go for a short jog thursday?  I was planning on a 20 minute easy jog to stay loose if anyone wants to join me!
Can't wait to get down there!

I won't get in until late Thursday so I can't jog on Thursday but I hope to hit the water at some point on Friday.  Maybe early before race sign in, etc?  I am really excited, this will be my first effort at the full distance.

Drugs and rest.  Hopefully, just a doctor imposed taper.   I just need to stay centered and calm.  Thanks for the kind thoughts.

Getting to the start line healthly is half the challenge...I did IMLP with pneumonia and IMFL 6wks after breaking three bones in my hand and having surgery and six pins inserted for 4 of those weeks.

Stay positive and you'll do great!

Sorry the last thing you need when you are just hanging let alone training for 140.6.  Hope you can get it cleared up.

Hey guys, the Chesapeakeman this weekend will be my first crack at an "ultra distance." The only triathlons I have ever done are 4 sprint tris (which were a blast), but I have always wanted to do a full Iron distance race.

I have stuck with a full iron training program for the past several months and am feeling confident in my ability. Unfortunately, I am not feeling very confident in my planning. It occurs to me that, for the most part, I have no idea what I am doing. I know the events (2.4M swim, 112M bike, 26.2M run) but I am clueless about the unique elements of the race. For example, I hear people talk about special needs and I realize that I have no idea what they are talking about.

I also have no clue what to tell my dad to do (the wife can't get off work, so he is my fan club). Do spectators just go around the course and find different spots to cheer you on or what?

Obviously several of you have a lot of experience, and any help (especially strategic and logistical help) would be greatly appreciated.

Special Needs Bags are bags that you get when you get to the race and check in. You can have a bike special needs and a run special needs. You fill the bags with things you think you may need halfway through the bike and run. You get them at mile 56 on the bike and mile 13 on the run. Do not put anything in them that you will want to get back as that is not gurenteed. People put things like gels, candy bars, cookies, soda, fresh socks etc. Whatever you think you may want.

The best place for a spectator really depends on the venue. I have not raced Chesapeakeman before so perhpas someone who has been there can chime in. I believe though the best place would be near the bike transition so that your spectator can see you bike and run.

Let us know if you have any more questions!

Agreed--T2 seems like it may be the best spectator spot--that way, friends/family get to see you twice on the bike leg, and 3 times at least on the run portion (as well as the finish!).  Also, from my understanding, the highschool bathrooms are open to racers/spectators (which would be much better than porto-pots), and there is a grocery store nearby in case they get hungry during the day.  I'd recommend you tell your dad to bring something to keep him occupied for a good 5 hours at least--it will be a long day.
Also, check out the forums on the Iron Distance page--some threads have  "the little things" that people found helpful during race day (like vasoline for chaffing, advil for innflammation).
have fun and good luck! we'll all be there with you!

My wife and I signed up pretty late for this race (9/7) and have not rec'd any email except for our registration confirmation.  I know Vego sends out a lot of emails for Eagleman.  Have you been receiving emails for Chesapeakeman?

If so can someone fwd me the email that included the athlete info packet?  straubtm at hotmail dot com.

Thanks and cya there.  We should be arriving early afternoon on Friday.

Hi, I won't be racing, but will be volounteering in the evening. I've read in the past about jellyfish stings on the swim, and how a lotion called 'safesea' helps prevent these. Just thought this might help. Good luck to you all on Saturday!

I checked the weather for saturday--just in case--looks like that morning will be below 50F right now! Just a heads up for anyone leaving tomorrow to pack accordingly! Heard the water will be warmer though--around 70ish.

That is funny.  Well we know for sure that it might rain or might not, could be sunny or maybe not and the temperature will be somewhere between 47 and 70 degrees.  I agree with your earlier post.... pack for everything and anything!!
