Subject: DB Press vs. Bench Press

As a follow up to the overhead lift thread, I'd like to start this conversation: what do people like better, dumbbell press or bench press?

I think my choice is dumbbell.  I feel like there is less stress on my rotator cuffs, there is a greator range of motion, and there is greater development of supporting muscles.

Thoughts?

I train with someone at Mike Boyle and -- big surprise -- they say dumbell press.

But, I have seen some of the guys doing a barbell chest press with this super-huge, heavy chain on the ends of the bar, which makes it harder as you lift.

I use dumbbells for incline presses and bench for flat and decline presses to go heavier.

DB Chest Press on the Stability Ball also you can do single arm chest press or single arm alternating chest press on the stability ball.

The older I get the more I use Dumbells. There is alot less room for error, and, if your like me (that is, without a spotter usually) it is much easier to bail out if you run out of gas.

However, for purely building mass, Barbell Bench, no question.

x2.  With dumbbells, sometimes when I really don't want to miss my lift, I'll spend over thirty seconds getting the last rep up.  Feels great having gotten such a hard-earned finish.  And I don't think even with a barbell and a really patient squatter would work for that.

The correct answer is both.  Variation is the key in either body building or just lifting for overall fitness.  I would never recommend sticking to one thing over another for a very long period of time.  Along with doing different lifts, you should also change reps and weight lifted on a regular basis.

I'm with Buckeye66. I use a combination of both with variation in my weight/rep scheme throughout the week. Each have their place in a well rounded routine.

Hate the barbell because of a problem with my wrists.  Dumbells allow me to choose and switch the angle as needed.

I'm also of the switchoff persuasion.  I like to start with a heavy incline barbell press and then switch to dumbells for flat.  I use a stability ball under my back and a Bosu under my feet for major core activation.  Also, doing either one-handed presses or static holds in either the down or up position really cranks it up. Dumbbells are great for that.

Another reason I like dumbbells for building both mass and strength...get a lighter set and rep for twice your heavy target reps...then do the heavy set...WOW...pump heaven!!!
