Pre-race routine:

Steph was a bike escort for the wheel chair racers so we had to get down there pretty early. We got up at 3:30 showerd, ate, and started driving.

I saw Jamie, the Blackmon's, and Greg before the start.
Event warmup:

I went to the back of corral 2 and immediately found Nora. We chatted a bit and then started.

Comments:

I had some problems with my Garmin so I was running blind. I saw Lisa at about mile 5 and she was looking really strong. I ended up hooking up with the four hour pace group for probably half the race. I stopped to use the bathroom at around 20 miles, and that was a mistake. I never was able to get the wheels to turn over again. I think I ran about 10 min miles the rest of the way. My main goal was to finish healthy and be able to resume training quickly so I never eally pushed it. My knees hurt a bit, but not too bad. My shin splint was barely noticeable. My siatic (sp) nerve enjoyed torchering me. My feet hurt. I had some chaffing problems. I found it hillarious that every problem I had during training the last few months came back to say "hello!", but none of them was a big deal on race day. I still went into a massive shivering fit at the end though. I think I need to figure out what is causing this. It ain't pretty or fun.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure I have the Garmin synced before the gun goes off. train like a Kenyan. Wear warmer clothes.
Post race
Warm down:

Shivered, shook, and stumbled towards the omni hotel lobby. There I sat down on a chair and immediately got a charlie horse. My lovely wife went and fetched me a large hot chocolate. That seemed to make the world a better place.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Injuries and colds all winter.

Event comments:

This is a great race. It is a cool tour of Atlanta and a good test. It's a tough place to PR, but it is still a lot of fun.

Good Job Doug, a solid race!  Recover quick and get back at it.  Probably a smart move not to push past the injuries this early in the season.  Smart.

My Garmin shut off at mile 7, so I was running blind the rest of the way. Not an easy thing to do when you have a goal. I tagged along with the 3:20 pace group for a few, but lost them at a water stop. heh.

anyway.. enough about me. : )   Congrats on finishing another Marathon. Seems to me, you like to do the tough ones. I suggest you try something like Chicago in 2010. Do a qualifying half and start in a seeded corral.

As far as the shivering, have you researched it? Two things come to mind. Core Temperature issues, or low blood sugar. I would focus on core temperature issues and see what you can find out about it.

Great Job on a tough course! Impressive that you could run this after all the nagging injury/sick issues in training.  this will set you up for a strong "rest of season"
