Subject: Loss of Motivation - The Swim

Seems like the whole winter I haven't wanted to swim.  Granted, I was pretty sick for a few months, but it didn't stop me from biking and running.  Now that I'm feeling fine, I can't seem to get my motivation up for the swim, and I definitely need to start getting ready for the season.

Is a loss of motivation in just one area pretty common?  How do you overcome it?  I should mention that I learned how to swim two years ago, and it is a source of ongoing stress (read:  fear).  I'm okay in a pool, but open water still freaks me out....not that it stopped me before.

Any suggestions?

Do you have a training partner? It helped me keep motivated to get my swim workouts in.

Until I got one, consistently getting in my swim wotkouts was an issue. I do not have a problem with biking or running workouts, but I would skip my morning swim workouts frequently. Now,knowing that someone is expecting you to show up at the agreed time and place gets me out of bed going without too much trouble. This is especially true if we are doing an OWS workout. Once I am in the water I am fine,it was just getting there was the problem.

i would also inquire as to what your workouts in the pool/OW consist of?

I know when i was doing long, endurance style swims in the 2-4000M range i found i would have a harder time motivating myself to get them done. When i switched to a combo of drillwork, endurance swims, etc.. I found myself looking forward to each session as it was different.
I think varying your workouts is key to staying interested.

A swim buddy seems like a good idea - I'll have to find a different time to go though.  I usually swim at lunchtime (at a club down the street from my job) and I can get in about 1200 yds.

Last year I did longer swims on the weekends when I had more time.  It's just what you had said, I find every excuse not to go to the pool.  Guess I should just HTFU.

Edited to add:  I typically just do laps - maybe boredom is the key as well....

it's a tough balance...you can't be great and in love with all three at the same time (usually)...it's just a balancing act.  i would suggest maybe trying to join a masters swim program so that not only do you have a swim partner...you have several and the workouts are always changing and keeping you fresh.

I go through this at times but I'm pretty motivated to get to the pool as I very much want to improve. I did invest in swim MP3 player last year as doing 1.5-2 hour swims takes some encouragement. Meeting tri friends to swim can make it more social but takes more time and might not be good for endurance type swims.

I am working with a new coach this year and I really like my workouts as they aren't just swim 4x500 or do ladders but vary a lot from workout to workout. This is what I'm doing today for example.

1600: 300 pull+band wu
8x25 kickboard. Evens
are strong hard kicks,
odds are shallow easier
kicks. After evens, 20sec
rest, 10sec after odds.
12x75/20 Into 4 sets of 3
choose drill middle 25 for
each set.
200 pull + paddles cd

I'm in the same place. I upped my swimming this winter and started varying my workouts more and have gotten faster...and I'm still bored with it right now. I suppose it's partly the prospect of having to build even more for my IM this summer, but really swimming's just feeling kind of "stale" right now. I guess a difference for me is that I can probably afford to lay off a bit, since I did swim alot over the winter, but eventually I have to get my pool mojo back.

Good luck!

Common affliction.  I dread the start of swim training after I've been out of it for awhile.  Yet in about 2-3 weeks I'll be loving it. Funny I have the fear of the pool, I love OWS so much it can get in the way of proper training!

I have my swim gear in the car today and am planning on swimming while my daughter is doing Y team  swim practice. 'Check is in the mail' as they say and I have the full payment due in 14 weeks...

Common affliction.

x2.

Part of what makes swimming so unattractive is that you are basically inside your head for X amount of time, staring at a black line, with "gurgle gurgle bubble bubble" as your only sounds. Swim team you at least have other people around to talk to between sets, etc.

I walked away from swimming because of burnout, and it's still a struggle to get back into the water on a regular basis. I got a shuffle for our anniversary, I'm getting a waterproof case and earbuds to see if that will help.

Thanks everyone - glad to know I'm not alone.  It was really confusing to me because I was very gungho about it just last year.....but now, not so much.

I'll try mixing it up a bit and buying a new suit (I love the girly idea on the other thread!)

Ugh, yeah, I feel ya!  I've been battling this for about a month now and it was a loosing battle.  Part of mine was that my gym was so restrictive on lap times that it really made it difficult to get there between my schedule and theirs I had about 5 hours a week available to me and 2 of those I had to twiddle my thumbs for an hour before hand.  I just sucked it up and joined a gym that is only closed to lap swim 2 hours a week.  Never mind the battle I was doing to get space in lanes and not be sharing with doggy paddle dude or noodle lady that didn't like to get her hair wet.

It will...I swim with tunes now and it makes it way more fun! I get some odd looks ...but it does make swimming more enjoyable !

John,

This is so true...my self talk in my head is normally what is my problem...with swimming being my weakness and being in my head doesn't help. My swim MP3 player helps me keep my head quiet.

I don't mind what head is saying!

This is so fitting.  Today of all days we get Thunderstorms rolling in at 6:30pm, right when I was going to leave work, pool's closed!   I can't remember the last time we had T-storms here, we're something like 5-6" behind in YTD rainfall already.

I look forward to my swims, but every so often, something doesn't click, and I cut it short...WAY short. Maybe the stroke doesn't feel right, or the back end seem to be sinking...whatever. If it's not working, it's not working, and nothing is going to get me to continue on a day like that. Chalk it up to...whatever, and look forward to my next swim day.

A close friend, who also does tri's and running events, and is pretty much the motivation that got me started in multisport in the first place, says that I am now the reason that she keeps up with her swimming. She never was a big fan of swimming, but was doing it to keep up with the tri training. And on the other hand, SHE is MY motivation to be at the pool at 5:45 AM 2 days a week.

Great question.  I'm not dealing with this right now, but I was just wondering recently if I'd ever go through it.

I think varying it up with drills and other focuses must help.   www.swimplan.com is a great way to get some workouts, too.

Though I don't listen to music while I run or bike, it doesn't feel too different when swimming, but that's terrific news that it's helping so many of you out.  That's great!

I sure hope you find your motivation again, Brownlab!
