I have started watching my heart rate when I bike and run. I got a base line by checking my heart rate when I wake up for several days. My rate was 105-110. Does this seem high for a resting HR? When I work out and feel good my HR is 175-185. What should I be looking for in my HR?

Thanks!
Matt

That rate does seem really high for resting. I am usually in the 70's for resting...and running/biking can get anywhere in the upper 190's, but average is 150-160. It also has a lot to do with age (I am 25).

What kind of heart rate monitor do you have? Is it working properly?

I use a polar monitor that I just receieved back from the factory. They had to put a new battery in the watch and strap. I am only 31, so I thought it was high also.

Was recently in for a physical, and double checked just now, and my resting heart rate is 48/bpm.  Over 100 is extremely high.  Are you sure you are checking it correctly?  Someone who exercises should certianly not be nearly that high.

I just saw that your using a monitor.  Check manually by feeling your pulse and looking at a clock.  175-180, for me, is an all out sprint, not a sustainable trot.

You would be surprised how getting up and doing the morning stretch sends your heart rate into the stratosphere.  The first time I took the test, my resting heart rate was 90, but that was because I took it right after I did my final "wake up roll" and stretch.

I retested myself after waking up by lying still for 20 min, and took my heart rate again.

Try retesting, after sitting still for 20 min, immediately after wake-up, and be sure not to stress yourself out by thinking about scrambling to get ready for work, etc.

Thanks everyone for your input. It maybe the watch. I just check my rate at my desk and it was 80 bpm. I am going to see if I can get a friends monitor and see what it says.

I tried sleeping with mine on (garmin 305), and had an average rate of 55.

Sitting HR of 80 sounds more normal. What is it when you wake up in the mornings?

I'm about your age and I'm around 55-60 bpm when I wake up, after getting up it rises to about 70. (Depends on daily form) If I'm sick or something it'll jump up even further. Maybe your body or (more hopefully) your heartrate monitor could use a check up.

Other than that, Feeling good at 175-185 - man! if only I could feel good at that level ;-)

Kind regards,
Jon

You are experiencing the effects of cortisol, cortisol is stress hormone, it is released to control heart rate, blood vessel diameter, basically the fight or flight response. It is your biological clock telling you to wake up. It is controlled by light( photon receptors) and a learned response.  It is completely normal, most people have a higher heart rate just after waking  up, it should calm done steadily within 5 to 25 min.

Sorry for the science review, lol.

My standing heart rate is rather low, 52-56. My exercising heart rate however is high, Im comfortable around 175, but 190+ is not uncommon when i am pushing. When I hit 205 ish I am getting close to my max but during a race sometime I will push that.

I am no expert on the heart rate bit. I am wondering if my heart rate is reasonable as well.
